For Derick Brassard, ice hockey has been a lifelong passion. Born in 1987, in Hull, Quebec, Brassard grew up watching hockey and began skating when he was five. Now 35, the center forward has been playing in the NHL since 2006. A veteran on the ice, the Canadian has played for teams like the Edmonton Oilers, Philadelphia Flyers, New York Rangers, and more. Before today’s game against the New York Rangers, Brassard was on the cusp of a huge milestone. However, ‘Big Game Brass’ didn’t expect his teammates to surprise him even before he achieved it.

Derick Brassard’s Ottawa Senators teammates surprised the NHL center in the locker room before the big game. The Ottawa Senators posted the 35-year-old’s emotional reaction on social media.

Derrick Brassard was inside the locker room with nearly all his Senators teammates. “So yeah! The boys just wanted to congratulate you, Brass. What a ride it’s been… Hopefully, you’ll enjoy this. This is from all the boys in here.” said the 35-year-old’s teammate.

Derrick Brassard, who was due to play his 1000th NHL game, stood up as everyone in the room clapped for him. The center forward carefully uncovered a wooden box and a smaller white box on top of it. The Ottawa Senators player immediately got emotional as he didn’t expect such a heartfelt gesture from his teammates even before he had played his 1000th game.

After getting teary-eyed, Brassard gathered himself and thanked his teammates. “That’s way too much… Thank you so much! This is way too much. I know you guys put a lot of money in this,” Brassard told his team. “Yeah, it’s just been a crazy ride. A lot of air miles traveled over the last few years, and I’m just glad I stuck with it,” added the 35-year-old in a Facebook video. He then hugged each of his teammates and opened the box to discover six bottles of premium liquor.
