Hockey is indeed an intimidating game. While the players make it look easy, the underlying competition says it all. While talking about the neck-to-neck games that make the sport a fan favorite, Gretzky admitted how he was fortunate enough to play in easier times. The Great One, with unbeatable records to his name, feels it was easy to win during his time than now.
While the confession may sound bizarre to some, he also praised players who are able to win back-to-back.

In 2019, Gretzky gave an interview with USA TODAY Sports, talking about his present-day perspective on the sport. The host asked the hockey legend if the neck-to-neck games and increasing scores were going to help NHL by any chance. To answer this, the White Tornado replied, “So we live in a country… where people love offense. And, I think that everyone realizes that, and I think the players realize that. Our coaches do, the league does, the commissioner does.”
He pertinently points out, “So, we try, everybody’s always trying, okay how can we make this more offensive? All right we’re gonna go three on three in overtime. We’re gonna call hooking and holding, we’re gonna call interference. And that’s all great, that’s all positive., and that’s what makes the game fun to watch.”
“It’s tougher to score now. I’m the first guy to sit here and tell you that I played in the right era. It’s harder to score points now than it was when I played. But everybody seems to put their hat on, and try to make it more of an offensive game.”, Gretzky added admitting his era of the sport to be easier than now.
