Hockey Legend Wayne Gretzky Turned a Party Pooper on His Daughter’s Special Day in 2012: “Don’t Know if You Can Call It a Date”

Love has always been the language of the Gretzky family. From Janet and Wayne Gretzky to Paulina and Dustin Johnson, the family restores fans’ faith in love.

These couples have set an example that if it’s meant to be, it’ll be with or without the knot. Wayne Gretzky and Janet Jones got married within a year of dating. Whereas their daughter took her own sweet time to decide on her big day.

Wayne Gretzky and his active role in his daughter’s love life

While Paulina Gretzky got engaged to her long-time boyfriend in 2013, it was only in 2022 that the couple tied the knot officially. However, do you know that the two met because of Gretzky’s parents?

Paulina first met Johnson in 2009, while the latter was paired with her mother for a Pro-Am event. During the event, the pro-golfer ended up at a dinner table with the Gretzky family. While describing the ordeal to GOLF, Wayne said, “That’s how it goes in our family. Janet and I go out to eat, and we somehow always wind up with seven or eight people at the table.”

Despite the meeting, it wasn’t until 2012 that Paulina and Johnson went out on their first date. Paulina isn’t sure she could consider it an actual date, given the fact, her father was present with them on the said “date.” She said, “I don’t know if you can it a date since my dad tagged along.” 

A third wheel or a cupid?

Initially, Wayne Gretzky might’ve interrupted his daughter’s first date with her now husband. However, he was also the one who encouraged the actress to pursue the golfer. It was when he first found out about her interest in the latter.

Earlier this year, during one of her Instagram Q&A session, Paulina revealed that it was her father who told her she should marry the golfer. The actress further added that she received one of the best relationship advice from the ice hockey legend. She shared in one of her stories, “He told me to weigh the pros and cons of dating someone. If there are few cons and many pros, then don’t rule them out right away.”
