For most NHLers, the allure of playing for their country at the highest international levels, such as the 4 Nations Face-Off, is too great to resist. For Vegas Golden Knights defenseman Shea Theodore, however, the decision came with a gamble. Theodore’s commitment to the national team was not only jeopardizing his body—it was jeopardizing his entire NHL season. In a recent interview, he spoke candidly about what happened and how it’s impacted his Vegas career.

Shea Theodore’s decision to dress for Team Canada at the 4 Nations Face-Off was motivated by a great passion for representing his nation at the biggest level. “It was special to wear that jersey and play with some of the best,” Theodore recalled about the experience. But with the honor came a cost. In Canada’s game against Sweden, Theodore injured his arm when Adrian Kempe collided with him, jamming his right arm into the boards.

This injury, which occurred on Feb. 12, has had Theodore sidelined since that game, and his return is unclear, with some saying he could be out till the playoffs. As one of the league’s top defensemen, his absence will be felt sharply by the Golden Knights. Despite the injury, he is committed to his NHL team as he recovers, though he doesn’t regret his experience with Team Canada. “It’s definitely special,” he said. “But at the same time, I’m just trying to grow my game, trying to play my best, and help the team win.”

Assistant coach John Stevens empathized with Theodore, acknowledging the problem of splitting national duties with NHL duties. “I felt terrible for him,” Stevens said. “He’s become one of the premier defensemen in the league, and this was a big opportunity for him.”

Shea Theodore’s current season and new deal

Theodore’s time with the Golden Knights has been nothing short of impressive. Since becoming one of the first players to join the Golden Knights, he’s become one of the finest defensemen in the league. He has been hailed for his poise and offensive value, as well as his blue line contributions on the ice. Despite the hit from his last injury, Theodore’s role in Vegas continues to be vital. This is not a player who can be easily replaced.

But the Golden Knights will just have to make do. With Theodore on the sidelines, they will have to rely on their depth options during this time. Nicholas Hague, Zach Whitecloud, and Kaedan Korczak would be the players deputizing for him, with the goal of the team being able to keep their tight defense going.

But despite the injury, Theodore’s future with the Golden Knights is locked in with the new seven-year, $51.975 million contract extension he signed in October. The deal will keep Theodore in Vegas till the 2031-32 season.

All eyes are now focused on his road to recovery and returning to the ice. As Shea Theodore fights to return from injury, the Golden Knights are counting on their depth to pull them through. They’re hoping that their best defenseman can be back in action in time for the push to the playoffs.
