Two losses in two days! Sitting at the sixth spot in the Metropolitan Division, the New York Islanders are finding it hard to back up their storied legacy this season. But while winning or losing is part and parcel of the game, it’s how tonight’s 6-3 loss was incurred against the Minnesota Wild that’s irking the fans.
Early in the second period at the Xcel Energy Center, the Islanders had a sufficient 3-1 lead. However, things quickly took a turn for the worse in the third period. All thanks to a mistake by New York defenseman Tony DeAngelo, the Minnesota Wild managed to get back into the game and ultimately take it away. Naturally, fans weren’t amused.
A post by Spittin’ Chiclets on X from February 8 highlighted the Islanders defensive star’s bizarre mistake from tonight’s game during the third period. “Tony DeAngelo just shot the puck into his own net,” reads the caption of the post as the accompanying video shows the 29-year-old making the most bewildering of mistakes at the Minnesota venue. Matt Boldy flicked the puck across the front of the Islanders’ net, and Tony somehow put it inside his own net. Dumbfounding, indeed!

But that wasn’t the only time that DeAngelo messed up tonight. In the power play of the second period, Frederick Gaudreau‘s shot was also deflected off the New York Islanders’ defensive star, bringing Minnesota within 3-2. For obvious reasons, it’s safe to say that Tony had a rough night, possibly getting a bit mixed up in his head about which side he was playing for. And fans were quick to note their frustration.

Ever since he was suspended for using “homophobic, racist, and sexist language” and for abusing officials in his junior hockey day, DeAngelo’s career has been marred with controversies. Referring to how he seems to continue to disappoint the community in new ways, one fan grunted on social media, “Garbage human, even worse player. Just an all around bad guy,” underscoring the fact that New York Islanders deciding to sign Tony still doesn’t sit well with the fanbase. Others could barely hold back their own complaints.
The New York Islanders defenceman gets a taste of the fans’ bashing
In late January, the Islanders signed free agent Tony DeAngelo for the rest of the 2024-25 season. Subsequently, fans clamored about the move, given the NHL athlete’s controversial past. Tonight’s faults seem to have brought out the angst once again and fans couldn’t stop slamming Tony for his play against the Wild. “Elite player!” sneered one fan, poking a jibe at DeAngelo, as another labeled the star simply as “bonehead.”

The New York Islanders’ recent trade rumors involving Noah Dobson and Brock Nelson have baffled many community members. However, the veteran frontman showed why he’s so sought-after by scoring one goal and bagging an assist tonight. Naturally, in contrast, Tony’s fumbles looked even more gnarly. “Tony D showing us his Defensive skills,” commented one fan sarcastically.
“That sucks,” another fan seemed upset with how DeAngelo failed to clear the puck despite being in the sport for so long. What about you? What did you think of the New York Islanders star’s defensive play from tonight? Tell us your take on the match in a comment!
