The 2025 trade window deadline is upon us. It’s technically Friday in Eastern Time, and the window closes at 3:00 pm. So it’s no wonder teams are scrambling to bag those last-minute deals, as rumors continue to fly. Now, the latest update about the Carolina Hurricanes has once again put forward Mikko Rantanen under the spotlight.

Insider Elliotte Friedman, who has been at the forefront of Rantanen-related trade news, dropped another wild update. “Okay, something else tonight,” Friedman wrote at the beginning of his post. However, what he said next linked Rantanen with another team. “Hearing talks are intensifying to send Mikko Rantanen to the Dallas Stars,” the Canadian added.

Friedman’s earlier update about Rantanen may have given Carolina fans a ray of hope. “Mikko Rantanen is taking warmups in Carolina,” the sports reporter wrote in his earlier update. This update came after a lot of fuss regarding the 28-year-old’s future with the Canes. The Finnish national joined the Hurricanes in a blockbuster three-team move, but the Canes seem to be eager to flip him.

Sports Illustrated reported the Carolina Hurricanes asked multiple teams about their “interest level” in the hockey forward. Unsurprisingly, many teams absolutely showed interest. Elliotte Friedman himself dropped an update saying the LA Kings were looking to trade for Rantanen. Meanwhile, Stanley Cup contenders Toronto also had their eye on the NHL star.

Unfortunately, the Canes asked too steep a price for Mikko Rantanen. The Fourth Period’s David Pagnotta shed some light on the situation. Pagnotta claimed that the Hurricanes asked for Matthew Knies during trade talks. With 24 goals and 41 points so far, Kines has been having a great season. Naturally, the Leafs GM Brad Treliving wasn’t having any of it. That being said, it seems Rantanen has finally found his right team.

Elliotte Friedman’s intel on Mikko Rantanen rings true

While Friedman dropped the hint, David Pagnotta has confirmed the news. The Fourth Period’s Editor-in-Chief explained that the Canes and the Stars have reached an agreement regarding the Finnish star. “Stars are finalizing a contract extension with Rantanen,” claimed the TFP report. You can call that a fast deal, considering the time between Friedman’s intel and Pagnotta’s confirmation.

It was especially swift considering the failed talks between the Leafs and Canes, and the several others who showed interest. Mikko Rantanen himself expressed his desire to sign an extension with “the right team” as per Pagnotta. With his six-year $55,500,000 contract with the Colorado Avalanche coming to an end, he had to sign with someone, even if it was the Hurricanes.

However, with just two goals in the 12 games he played for the Carolina Hurricanes, they might have considered it’s best to part ways. Unfortunately, The Fourth Period report didn’t mention any details about the value of the new deal. Yet, that’s expected because the finalization is still not complete. So what do you think of the outcome of the buzz that surrounded Rantanen? Write your views in the comments.
