Just a few hours ago, the St. Louis Blues and Brandon Saad decided to mutually part ways, ending his contract after he was put on waivers leaving behind a chunk of change, about $5.425 million, according to PuckPedia. The Blues had been trying to trade him for months, but no deals materialized. “Obviously the production’s not there,” GM Doug Armstrong admitted on Tuesday. “Right now the cap is tight, and obviously, statistically, he’s not having a great year and he’s got another year left. If we could find a match, we would try.”
Saad’s stats this season are less than stellar, with just 16 points in 43 games and a low 9.3 shooting percentage, which is one of the worst of his 14-year career. The two-time Stanley Cup champion is still locked into a contract with a $4.5 million cap hit through next season. Despite his desire to keep playing in the NHL, the extra year and high cap hit made it tough for teams to bite on him when he went on waivers. Now a free agent, Saad is open to signing with any team. And now, an Edmonton Oilers analyst has even hinted at the possibility of Brandon Saad joining them, while he sacrifices those $5M for Leafs!

On a recent episode of Oilers Now with Bob Stauffer, Bob dropped some pretty interesting thoughts, saying, “If anybody can relate to the Prince Alberts and the Erie’s in Major Junior Hockey at an NHL level, it’s fans in Edmonton, because not everybody’s wanted to come here. Well, now, a lot of them want to come here, including the guy that was waved today. Anyways, I digress.” You could tell he was hinting at some big moves in the works, but with his usual flair, he kept it casual and cryptic.
Over on X, Shaedon from @oilrigedm couldn’t help but jump in with his own take, sharing, “Stauffer said this last night on OilersNow. Saad is becoming an Oiler” So, it looks like that big wave Bob mentioned might just be leading to a new chapter for Brandon Saad in Edmonton, huh?
Bob Stauffer? Oh, you know the name if you’re an Oilers fan. The guy’s been the voice in your ear for 17 seasons, breaking down every play, every trade, and every what-if moment since joining the Oilers Radio Broadcast team in 2008. Before that? He was running the show on Total Sports over at Team 1260, and these days, you can catch him stirring up hockey talk on Oilers Now every weekday afternoon on 880CHED.
Oh and if that wasn’t enough, he’s also a panelist on Oilers NHL Hockey for Rogers regional broadcasts. But back to the juicy stuff—Brandon Saad. Could he really be heading home to the Maple Leafs or is it Edmonton Oilers? The idea’s floating around, and with all the twists and turns we’ve seen lately anything feels possible.
Saad off to the Maple Leafs?

The Maple Leafs have a golden shot at scooping up a bona fide Stanley Cup champ without giving up a single asset—talk about a rare win-win. And the cherry on top? Brandon Saad has already played under Craig Berube, so there’s built-in chemistry just waiting to be reignited. After the Blues tried and failed to move the 32-year-old forward via trade, they decided to place him on waivers Tuesday.
By Wednesday, Saad had cleared, and as per Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman, he’s now working on cutting ties with St. Louis to sign elsewhere and keep his season rolling.
A two-time Cup winner from his Chicago Blackhawks days, Saad took his talents to St. Louis as a free agent in 2021 and quickly became a staple under Berube’s watch. In his debut season with the Blues, he stacked up 24 goals and 49 points across 78 games. The following year?
Another solid showing with 19 goals and 37 points in 71 games. With Toronto’s bottom-six looking a little meh lately, it’s not hard to see why a Berube-Saad reunion might just make sense.
But Leafs fans? Yeah, not everyone’s feeling it. One fan didn’t hold back, saying, “All for a chance to sign with the Leafs for the league minimum and get bounced in the early rounds of the playoffs… what a shame.”
Safe to say, not everyone’s rolling out the welcome mat for Saad in Toronto.
