The Utah Hockey Club is in trouble. 6th in the Central team of the Western Conference standings, the NHL team is coming off with a total of 50 games played in the 2024-25 season. With 21 wins and a losing streak in three games, players like Clayton Keller, Mikhail Sergachev, and Sean Durzi currently take the top three spots.

The University of Utah hockey team will no longer be named Yeti. Their partnership with a certain cooler endorsing company has got them under a drifting phase that was overcome by an unexpected turn of events faced by the hockey team. The only option left for revenue engagement is now also gone.

Utah does not have option of being called as ‘Yetis’

The Yeti Coolers’ past move is coming into question today. Their partnership with the NHL Utah Hockey Club now poses them with a challenging phase. With issues of trademark coming in, Utah is no longer eligible to use Yeti’s name. As per reports, the Utah team applied for a trademark application for their new name as Utah Yetis. Rejected by the US Trademark Office this month, the partnership is now at a loss.

Smith Entertainment Group, who was extensively working for the trademark and trying to strike up a business deal between the two, ended up with rejection. Giving out the insider statement on the matter, SEG executive Mike Maughan says, “We have engaged with Yesti coolers extensively. The NHL has also helped engage with us with them… Their leadership made the decision that they didn’t want to have that coexistence agreement… They have a unique trademark that allows them to prevent the use of the word Yeti or Yetis.” As a Florida State Coach, Coach Duggs puts it: this lists as “an all-time dumb move by @YETICoolers.”

The Utah Hockey Team, who are still without any official name, are, however, in desperate need of one. Delay after delay after getting multiple rejections, the NHL team is facing a hard time to get a final one. To get hold of the situation now, the SEG has come up with a new alternative for the team to get their official name.

Fans suggest their new names for Utah

Utah Blizzard, Utah Yetis, Utah Venom, and Utah Hockey Club have been the potential rejections as names. But with no official name given yet, fans now have the upper hand in the selection process, with voting options coming into effect in 29th and 31st January, followed by in February 2nd and 4th. The voting will see fans select among the top three names that are currently coming into the run, including Utah Mammoth, Utah Wasatch, and Utah Hockey Club.

The Smith Entertainment Group has been the helping hand in involving fans to make such decisions, and with Utah not having come to any decision, this makes the process easier and also a big way to generate fans attention. With the rejection faced by the Yeti collier company, fans have given out comments proving some selective names for the Utah team. A fan comment, however, gives a humorous appeal to the team’s existence in the hockey league. “Mammoth! They’re gonna bring it back from extinction, could you imagine the hype when they bring one out on the ice?” Having stayed without any official name for a long time, the Utah hockey team finally will get the final selection.

For a fan, the suggestion came for Outlaws: “I would go with the Utah Outlaws. Sweater designs would be epic.” Outlaws in Utah have a big history, and for the fan, the name comes as a best fit in terms of custom design in their sweaters. Another fan came into support, suggesting two options for the name. “Utah venom or Utah outlaws.” Getting a second vote for Outlaws, a different suggestion came for Venom. The Utah might have a big chance to have Outlaws in their name.

But for a fan, the team’s original name, however, comes as a best fit. “I’m about to trademark I love when Utah Hockey.” The name Utah Hockey seems to be one that fans want to be trademarked. Not any additions, but the Utah are best fit to go for the normal to be named as the hockey team club. “Hockey Club. Keep it simple.” Keeping it simplistic is what the fan suggests.

Besides Venom and Outlaws, a fan comes with another different suggestion. “Utah Bees and they can nickname their new arena ‘the hive’—fanbase the swarm.” Not just the name; the suggestion also comes with the team’s fanbase name too, that co-relates with one another. Shortlisting names like Blizzard, Hockey Club, Mammoth, Outlaws, Venom, and Yeti last year in the initial round. The second phase selection hasn’t been revealed as of now, but the three probable selections came with the final one yet to be given. All we have is to wait and see what fits best for the Utah hockey team.
