“We just have to bounce back, and we just have to find our way to win the games,” said the Washington Capitals’ captain after the team’s massive loss to the Buffalo Sabres on Sunday at Capital One Arena. A sloppy 8-5 defeat, and Alex Ovechkin couldn’t stop but focus on the bigger picture, as his team’s struggles were more pressing than his own pursuit of Wayne Gretzky’s record! Losing consecutively before the final end? Well, the Capitals definitely need to act fast!

With the playoffs around the corner and concerns rising, the Capitals need to be wary of their stats now that they head into the final stretch of the season. Ovechkin’s personal efforts have kept the game going, and almost close to winning in most of the games, but the question is, with three back-to-back losses, will the Capitals revive their momentum as they head towards the playoffs? After all, with nine regular-season games remaining, the team probably feels at the risk of losing!

Head coach Spencer Carbery couldn’t hold back and thus, offered a brutally honest confession in his post-game interview. “That’s not who we are. And it’s disappointing because when we try to… when we get away from our game and pucks start turning over and we can’t execute at the offensive blue line,” Carbery admitted. Revealing just how disconcerting the current slump is, while raising serious concerns about the team’s lack of ability to compete at the highest level when it matters most!

Despite Ovechkin finishing the night by adding another goal to his Gretzky’s record chase and contributing two assists, the Capitals still struggled to match the Sabres’ pace. The latter aggressively responded to the Capitals, by scoring first and wasting no time in grasping control—a 4-2 lead and the Sabres headed into the third period with full dominance. Perhaps it was during that moment when Carbery realised to bring in potential changes into the lineup.

“First three shifts and I go, uh-oh. And guys are trying and there’s effort and stuff involved. But at the end of the day, you have to be able to just play direct and play our style,” the coach admitted, after moving Ovechkin alongside Pierre-Luc Dubois and Anthony Beauvillier. But it made no difference, and the Capitals fell behind 6-3. “And we fail to do that against this team consistently, which ultimately falls on me. And that’s why I have to change things and make some decisions to move guys around. To try to get something on track for our group,” Carbery further declared.

Washington Capitals look for redemption battle

With the coach planning to introduce some significant changes now and the Capitals falling apart with three consecutive losses, it could be interesting yet thrilling to see them fighting against the Boston Bruins, who themselves are in a slump, in their next match-up! Yes, the Bruins, who probably are still recovering from the loss of their longtime captain, Brad Marchand. The Bruins have placed themselves in a difficult state to rise among the new adjustments, but don’t let us make you believe that this is going to be an easy matchup!

With both teams desperately trying to turn things around, it indeed makes this a high-stakes battle. For Bruins’ head coach Joe Sacco, it is the efforts of his team that could make a difference any time they are on the ice, if they don’t miss any opportunity to tackle the opponents. “We weren’t able to capitalize on a few of our chances there, especially one at the end, but like I said, I think that the effort was solid tonight,” Sacco said while emphasizing resilience over results. And for Carbery? Well, it is the changes that could ignite the spark his team desperately needs.

So with the Bruins finding their way to capitalize on their struggles and the Capitals trying to compete with new adjustments, will the two teams finally be able to keep their playoffs hope alive? It’s only the greatest clash on Wednesday, April 2, that will decide the chances. But with anticipation rising, one can only expect a massive fire on the ice.
