The Chicago Blackhawks lost against the Utah Hockey Club just to get one step closer to an awaited disaster — a lost season. The Blackhawks are 8th and last in the Central Division. And Seth Jones has had enough. The 30-year-old Chicago Blackhawks defenseman fumed over the latest defeat and could only use tough words to express his deep feelings.
When he was asked about his team’s 4th straight loss after the Nashville Predators, Seth Jones couldn’t hold himself back with a filter. Jones said, “We’re the exact same team right now as we were in game 1. It’s pretty evident out there. We haven’t made any strides to be a better, more simple hockey team, and it shows.” The Chicago Blackhawks defenseman further added, “We had no business being in that game.” After playing 58 games, Seth Jones’s team could only manage 17 wins and 41 points. Terrible season.
Seth Jones, whose filter is completely gone at this point: “We’re the exact same team right now as we were game 1. It’s pretty evident out there. We haven’t made any strides to be a better, more simple hockey team, and it shows.”

That being said, the Utah Hockey Club would be more disappointed with the final scoreline than the Chicago Blackhawks. After all, the debutant team had 93 attempts on goal against the Blackhawk’s 39. Seth Jones, who scored the lone goal for the Chicago side, however, thought the defense was equally at fault, “[We were] refusing to play simple and turning pucks over. [It’s] not just forwards. It’s everybody, [including] defensemen.” He further said, “We weren’t very good on the breakouts tonight.” Frustration is mounting.
But under all the frustration, something is nudging Seth Jones. The NHL trade deadline is on March 7, 2025. Will the Chicago Blackhawks trade Seth Jones or the defenseman himself seek a trade?
Back-to-back losses, almost lost season, and the potential trade of Seth Jones
But before we move on to Seth Jones’s potential trade, this situation reminds me of NFL’s Cheetah, Tyreek Hill. Exactly similar to Jones, the Miami Dolphins star Tyreek Hill also got frustrated with the back-to-back losses in the 2024 season and finally blurted, “I’m out,” when their final game of the regular season was over. The Hawks seem to be living in a similar environment now. The veteran defenseman’s frustration mounted, and the Chicago Blackhawks could not win more games. Are they waiting for miracles?
Well, we don’t about the others but Seth Jones is definitely not waiting for a miracle. Jones has signed a typical eight-year $76,000,000 deal with the Chicago Blackhawks franchise which is coming to an end in 2029. But as the 2025 trades are coming closer and closer, the rumors about Seth Jones’s trade are swirling in the NHL world.
One of the solid points to consider the Blackhawks may trade Jones is his salary. The organization pays him $9.5 million against the salary cap — money like that is reserved for the best of the best. So, moving him to another team would definitely help the franchise financially, and would allow them to invest in more future-proof talent. With the Dallas Stars rumored to be in the market for Jones, the Hawks could eye 23-year-old Mavrik Bourque. Still in his early days in the NHL Bourque has scored 9 goals and 10 assists in the 52 games he played. Moreover, he could really help the Hawks solve their face-off circle problems.

Another possible destination for Jones could be the Florida Panthers, who would want to reinforce their blueline going into the playoffs. The trade could then see winger Mackie Samoskevich head to the Hawks camp. With 9 goals and 9 assists in a total of 50 games this season, the 2021 draft pick is coming off an impressive AHL season which saw him rack up 22 goals and 32 assists in 62 games for the Charlotte Checkers .
And now to talk about one real, simple update on Seth Jones, Elliotte Friedman has reported, “I think the Hawks have indicated that if it doesn’t work, I don’t think they have a problem with keeping him. This sounds like it’s more Jones driven, than Blackhawks driven.” Well, the defenseman has a say in the trade and has the potential to move or stop the pieces in trades. Now let’s see how things would go for Seth Jones in the upcoming season.
