Connor McDavid is a staple at the Edmonton Oilers’ annual Skill Competition. Wowing in Fastest Skater and hosting a pinpoint accuracy clinic in shootout events, McDavid tends to head the party. But not appearing at this year’s competition raised eyebrows, and eyebrows only, with speculations about a lingering injury or sickness voiced.

The Oilers’ Skills Competition is a fan spectacle, with thousands in attendance at Rogers Place to witness players testing out for speed, shot, and puck-handling skill. It’s a day filled with entertainment, providing a chance for a player to have a little fun and indulge in a little one-on-one with the fan base. McDavid’s no-show stands out in that he is one of the most dominating participants and consistently takes over with jaw-dropping pace and skill level.

While no reason for the unavailability of Connor McDavid was stated, rumblings have been heard in the Oilers’ dressing room with a suspected case of illness, and not surprisingly, McDavid, Mattias Ekholm, and Mattias Janmark all sat out competition. Corey Perry did report but sat out, most likely for management of recovery.

The timing of McDavid’s miss heightens concern. The Oilers are fighting for a playoff position, and any issue with their most important player can represent a big blow. McDavid did play in Edmonton’s most recent fixture, a Toronto contest, so it’s not necessarily a big issue, but Oilers fans will no doubt monitor any update closely.

The impact of Connor McDavid’s absence on the Oilers

For years, McDavid has been the heart and soul of the Oilers, and whenever he’s not present—even for a frivolous occasion such as the Skills Competition—he brings uncertainty. As one of the NHL’s top performers, McDavid’s availability is a direct reflection of Edmonton’s success and playoff positioning. With the Oilers fighting for playoff position, a prolonged layoff for their captain would become a big problem.

Historically, the Oilers have not played well when Connor McDavid is not in the lineup. With him, one of the most valuable assets in the NHL, single-handedly controlling and dominating in Edmonton’s direction, one can understand why the Oilers’ offensive production suffers when not in the lineup, and even a player in the form of Leon Draisaitl must shoulder an even greater burden. That being said, Draisaitl can produce, but the Oilers’ best shot at success comes when both of its two superstars are controlling terms together.

Additionally, McDavid’s no appearance at the Skills Competition took a toll overall on the competition. He’s a draw, normally, for events like Fastest Skater, in which he consistently posts jaw-dropping times. Winger Kasperi Kapanen took it this year with a 40.0 mark, an accomplishment in its own regard but one not with anticipation at seeing McDavid in competition.

Another notable high mark was Viktor Arvidsson winning the Hardest Shot with a 101.5-mph shot, outdoing Darnell Nurse. As much amusement as the contest provided, Connor McDavid’s presence could not but be missed both for him and for his fellow skaters.

There’s no report yet about McDavid tending to an ongoing issue or whether it’s a precautionary break. Given the Oilers’ closely contested Western Conference campaign, the team could have played safe and retained him for even larger games.

It’s also possible that whatever illness is circulating through the team took its toll on Connor McDavid, and Ekholm missed the most recent game for similar motives. In that scenario, the captain of the Oilers will soon enough resume activity with no issue at all. That being stated, if McDavid missed a game, it would mean an issue a little deeper than a precautionary motive. The Oilers have not yet publicly addressed and will have to patiently await an update in a future lineup report. There is one fact, though: with McDavid, Edmonton’s long playoff run odds take a significant hit.
