Connor McDavid is considered to be one of the most respected ice hockey players on the rink. Indeed, he has remained loyal to a single team since the Edmonton Oilers drafted him back in 2015. The fans love him, and he does it back. However, in the NHL, trades are unexpected, and even loyal players like McDavid have the possibility to get traded to some other franchise. Until now, it hasn’t happened, but we can’t say anything about the future.

Similarly, the NBA is no different from the NHL when it comes to these shocking trades. Recently, a trade between the Dallas Mavericks and the Los Angeles Lakers shocked the community. Indeed, this deal featured a certain Mavericks star, prompting immediate comparisons to McDavid.

So what actually happened in the NBA? The Dallas Mavericks traded Luka Doncic, Maxi Kleber, and Markieff Morris to the Los Angeles Lakers for Anthony Davis, Max Christie, and a 2029 first-round pick. This three-team deal also included the Utah Jazz. So Doncic to the Lakers? Which earth are we living on right now? The community’s response was exactly as expected!

With Doncic moving to the Lakers, he and LeBron James will be a formidable duo. But what exactly were the parallels between him and the NHL’s Connor McDavid? Back in the 2018 NBA draft, Doncic was originally selected by Atlanta, but in no time he got traded to Dallas, and it was the team he started his NBA career with. Similarly, coming to the NHL, McDavid has been a part of the Edmonton Oilers since the 2015 draft and has not considered opportunities elsewhere.

Indeed, both of them have been loyal to their respective teams, and this trade showcased the unexpected nature of deals in the sports world. But how did they prove their loyalty? For Doncic, back in 2021, he signed a massive five-year, $207 million contract and always wanted to secure the NBA title with the Mavericks. Furthermore, he always had a wonderful relationship with former team owner Mark Cuban.

The same goes for McDavid, who was a prodigy when he started with the Oilers. He proved himself on the rink, and in 2017, he signed a whopping eight-year, $100 million contract with Edmonton. Until now, he has been with the same, but even his contract will expire in the upcoming 2025–26 season. No rumors have circulated about his extension with the Oilers, but the community immediately compared him to Doncic’s Lakers move.

The Connor McDavid parallels overflowed

Rarely, any NHL fan can imagine Connor McDavid without the sweater of the Edmonton Oilers. And this is the same when it comes to Luka Doncic, but without the Dallas Mavericks jersey. One fan stated, “Alright…, just-just, ‘f**k it…’ to Quote Avalanche’ Adrian Dater… This is like if the Edmonton Oilers Traded Connor McDavid. I said it.” Another fan wrote, “In NHL terms, this would be Connor McDavid traded for Nathan MacKinnon.” In a simple way, this fan conveyed, stating, “Connor McDavid for Nikita Kucherov.”

Many players in the NHL are getting compared with the Oilers’ captain after this blockbuster NBA trade. However, the NHL also had its own version of a similar trade between the Colorado Avalanche, the Carolina Hurricanes, and the Chicago Blackhawks. But who was the main surprise here? It was Mikko Rantanen, who was a star forward for the Avs but was traded to the Canes. Indeed, nobody saw it coming, but just like Doncic’s trade, it eventually happened.

This fan on social media explained to the NHL fans, stating, “If any NHL fan is confused, this is like if the Oilers were to trade Connor McDavid for future considerations but the future considerations were like picks 67 and 89.” Another user wrote, “The Mavericks, my favorite NBA team, just traded the NHL Equivalent of Connor McDavid for those people that are unfamiliar of how good Luka is.”

Indeed, such kinds of trades between the franchises are not only surprising but also rare. Doncic was a bit of an asset to the Mavericks over the seasons he played in the NBA, but times change. And when it comes to McDavid, his future with the Oilers might also come into question if the team doesn’t offer him an extension in a few months.
