Nothing looks impossible when Alex Ovechkin is on board and playing hard, right? The same happened in the Washington Capitals vs Edmonton Oilers game yesterday. Though people have already put this Russian maestro in the Hall of Fame, guess what? At the age of 39, Alex Ovechkin does not let anyone predict him easily. The exceptional NHL player of all time has hit a new record and is waiting to achieve the greatest. Any idea which historical record we are talking about? No, not that. At least not YET.
Everything was steady, and nothing exceptional was on the horizon until Alex Ovechkin effortlessly scored a hat-trick to shock everyone. According to stats, this is the 32nd time Ovechkin has repeated the feat. Ovechkin had always come through for the Capitals when the team needed it the most, so it was no surprise there and crushed the Edmonton Oilers with a 7-3 banger. And guess what, Ovi is now ‘this’ close to breaking the all-time great record of the hockey GOAT Wayne Gretzky.

But before we learn about the statistical magnitude of Ovechkin’s record in comparison to Hall of Famer Wayne Gretzky, Alex had much to say about the victory over the Oilers and the trick up his sleeve. “It means a lot. The kids love hockey,” Ovi continued, “Obviously, we played against one of the best teams in the league, two best players out there. It’s nice to get a win. It’s nice to get a couple of goals. I’m pretty sure they are going to be happy.” And the cherry on the cake? Ovechkin’s family was also in the stands.
Spencer Carbery was beaming with pride at the Capitals’ Captain. “The goals he scored tonight were huge goals in the game. Obviously, when you score three, they have a big impact, but the moments when they were scored, the game was highly competitive.” So, how many more goals does Ovi have to net to match Wayne Gretzky’s all-time record? Let’s dive deep!
Alex Ovechkin inches closer to breaking Hall of Famer Gretzky’s record
Alex Ovechkin’s tally has come down to 29 goals in 41 games just this season, which is incredible. But… Ovi is only 13 goals away from breaking Wayne Gretzky’s record which is 895 all-time goals. There are 25 games remaining for the Washington Capitals. That is 25 more Ovechkin Shows to stay tuned for. Despite missing six weeks this season due to a broken leg, nothing seems to deter him from making his mark. Anticipation for the moment when Ovi breaks Gretzky’s is electric and contagious, the question that lingers on is how soon would Ovechkin achieve legendary status?

Talking about the same, Ovechkin has said, “Game by game. Yeah, today I have pretty good chances to score more, but I’ll take three.” said Alex, his demeanor ever so cool as a cucumber, yet not revealing his plans. But his teammate is confident over Ovechkin’s impending blockbuster feat. The Capitals forward Tom Wilson said, “Some guys score and they [think], ‘OK, I had a good night.’ He comes back to the bench (and) he’s asking if he can go out again right away. It’s pretty fun, and it’s been an amazing journey watching him do what he can do.” Well, that’s what makes him one of the greatest players ever to have played the game.
The Capitals coach Spencer Carbery could hardly contain himself at what Alex Ovechkin has achieved in the game. Carbery said, “You can’t write this stuff. You cannot write a story and a book of what he’s doing right now at 39. The goals he’s scoring… Massive goals against the Stanley Cup finalists from last year, as good a team as there is in the League. It’s just incredible.” Well, he is just 13 goals away which looks way too easy for a player like Ovi. Soon and sure enough, Gretzky’s all time record now looks like a stroll in the park for Ovechkin.
