There isn’t a single scenario where the Chicago Blackhawks can make the NHL playoffs. Languishing at the bottom of their conference and second last in the league, not even a miracle will save their season. Yet, as the end of the regular season looms closer, it seems the team is struggling even to salvage whatever is left of the season.

Besides being in a five-match skid, the Blackhawks have hit rock bottom after losing back-to-back matches with identical 6-2 scorelines. That’s 12 goals, against just 4 of their own. Their latest loss came against Seattle Kraken, a team struggling in 7th place in the Pacific Division. Naturally, “tensions are running high” as Anders Sorensen and Co. face some difficult questions.

In fact, the condition over at the Blackhawks camp is so bad that the team is giving up on “supposed” off days. Chicago Blackhawks beat reporter Ben Pope revealed that the whole team attended a video review of their latest 6-2 disaster, and then practiced. Sorensen explained it wasn’t a pleasant affair: “We were honest with each other. Looked at some not-so-pleasant clips from last night.”

Unfortunately, honesty alone is clearly not working for the Blackhawks. Thankfully, Coach Sorensen assured reporters he and the team are working on turning things around in double time. In fact, that’s the reason they got back to practicing despite the day initially starting as an off-day. “Trying to clean some of that stuff quickly. We play again tomorrow,” said the coach.

There’s another reason why the Chicago Blackhawks are desperate to get their act together. “[We’re] trying to keep everybody on the same page, and I think the guys are, for the most part, doing a decent job,” revealed coach Sorensen. However, losing five games and the last two with such big margins is eating away at the confidence of the Blackhawks squad. That’s something the coach desperately wants to avoid. Sadly, there’s a possibility that the interim head coach’s days with the Blackhawks may be numbered.

Will the Chicago Blackhawks replace Anders Sorensen?

The Swedish ice hockey coach took over as the coach after Luke Richardson’s departure. As if being a first-time NHL coach wasn’t bad enough, Sorensen had to revitalize a slumping team. While things looked to be going in the right direction, Sorensen’s Blackhawks have once again found themselves near the bottom of the lot.

Under Anders Sorensen’s leadership, the Chicago Blackhawks have gone 12-23-7 with a .369-point percentage. While that’s a slight improvement from Richardson’s .346-point percentage, the Hawks fell behind on a key metric. Besides struggling with defensive woes, the team’s offense stats have also taken a huge hit.

While the Blackhawks sported a 43.5% goal share under Luke Richardson, that statistic is now 43%. And it’s understandable, considering how the NHL team’s biggest talents haven’t had a great season either. Take 19-year-old prodigy Connor Bedard for example. After a stellar rookie season, Bedard has struggled to score goals recently, even earning back-to-back penalty dismissals.

So all in all, it’s safe to say that things are not adding up for the Chicago Blackhawks. Now the question is: Will their efforts to snap the losing streak pay off tomorrow against the LA Kings? Or will Anders Sorensen and Co. have to deal with another bout of disappointment?
