Nothing seems to be going the way of the Boston Bruins this season. After trading one of their longest-serving players, Brad Marchand, the downfall continued for the team as they kept on suffering heavy losses. And in their latest game, they were completely outplayed by the Los Angeles Kings, suffering a 7-2 defeat. Amid the team’s woes on the ice and their 6-game losing streak, their goaltender, Jeremy Swayman‘s shocking stats have left fans angry.
Swayman was the goaltender for the Bruins in their game against the Kings, where he let seven goals slip in. While he has been the number 1 goaltender for the Bruins this season, Jeremy Swayman has found himself in an embarrassing position. In the wake of the defeat, a shocking stat of his was posted onto the Bruins subreddit that left fans up in arms. And spoiler alert: it wasn’t pretty.
The stat? It showed the number of goals conceded by Swayman in each of his last 4 games, which are 7, 5, 4, and 4 goals, respectively. Now it’s true that the Bruins’ offense hasn’t been clicking either, but the number of goals that Swayman has allowed has also played a big role in the Bruins’ downfall. But it doesn’t end there. The loss against the Kings marked the third time that Swayman has let in at least 7 goals this season. His numbers have further plummeted too, dropping to a 3.12 GAA and an .892 SV% in 51 appearances.

With these disappointing stats, the original poster on Reddit questioned whether Jeremy Swayman would even get a $4 million contract if he were to enter free agency this summer. It only served to highlight the whopping 8-year, $66 million contract extension he signed that has been looking like quite the mistake to fans. While the fans were angered after coming to terms with this shocking statistic, they even felt that the entire team was responsible for the downfall this season.
Fans lose their cool, but Jeremy Swayman doesn’t get all the blame
The Stanley Cup playoffs are now a distant dream for the Bruins. But at the very least, they were hoping for Jeremy Swayman to rediscover his form from last season and step up. But that was just one of their concerns. A fan wrote, “The problem at this rate is… he could be breaking mentally. And the team is bound to be not great next season either.” The fan felt that the toxic environment and poor results would also have an effect on his mental well-being, and it wouldn’t bode well to begin the next season with an underperforming team and a goaltender shot of confidence.
However, some fans even felt that Swayman wasn’t the only one responsible for the Bruins’ poor showing this season. “I will make my decision next year if I am done with Swayman. Frankly outside of Pastrnak and Geekie the whole team has let me down. Swayman is a part of it but I am willing to give him one more chance to win my heart and show he deserves this contract,” a fan wrote, as he was hopeful that with a proper defensive lineup, Swayman could rediscover potential in front of the goal.

Similarly, another fan remembered the time when Jeremy Swayman put on scintillating performances for the Bruins, especially during the 2023-24 postseason. While he has shown only glimpses of his best form this year, a fan wrote, “Not a fan of the bruins, but I do like Swayman. He’s a proven goalie that’s having an off year. He will get to it again next year.” Thus, the fan was hopeful that Swayman could emerge stronger after a horror season for the entire team.
Further, a section of fans also questioned the Bruins’ defensive lineup this season, which was also a major cause of concern for them. Not blaming Swayman alone, one comment read, “Listen, he’s not been up to standards for sure. But his defense is getting walked. He’s playing in front of an ahl team with pasta. Look at Igor this year. Sway won’t be our problem next year.” With this, the fan hoped that the Bruins could find the right combination in defense for the Bruins next season, where Swayman would receive more support and be able to shine.

Lastly, a fan put the blame on the entire team instead of pointing out Jeremy Swayman alone. “Whole team is busted. They dont even have a captain. Tune out until next year if the pain is too much,” said the fan, pointing out that if a team doesn’t even have something as basic as a captain, then the season was a write-off.
After the loss against the Kings, the Bruins continue to remain second from the bottom in the Atlantic Division. With this season becoming one to scratch from the history books, the Bruins would hope to put these woes behind and get it together for the next season.
