You’d think Brock Nelson would be over the moon after scoring the New York Islanders‘ stunning victory over the Winnipeg Jets. I mean, the Islanders are in the bottom half of the Metropolitan Division, while the Jets sit atop the Central Division. Yet, Nelson admitted, “there were some emotions for him,” as per Andrew Gross. That’s because Nelson’s future with the Islanders is in serious jeopardy.
Despite his dedication toward his team, the Islanders’ alternate captain is up for trade. While the 33-year-old has talked to Lou Lamoriello, Gross explained that Nelson had no clue what would happen in the next three days. Now, TSN’s Pierre LeBrun has come out with another update, and things are not looking good for the Islanders’ center.
“Brock Nelson situation still in flux. No guarantee still that Lou Lamoriello trades him, although that seems to be developing as most likely option,” LeBrun wrote on X. On a more hopeful note, he wrote that there is no shortage of teams looking to sign Brock Nelson. “Minnesota, Winnipeg, New Jersey, Colorado, Toronto among long list of teams with interest,” added the journalist.

What’s more? As per Pierre LeBrun, the teams he mentioned weren’t the only ones willing to have Nelson in their team. The Fourth Period’s David Pagnotta also chimed in with an update. Pagnotta had a slightly different possibility regarding Nelson. “It is my understanding the Isles will/have presented a contract offer to him,” said the analyst.

Yet, The Fourth Period’s Editor-in-Chief agreed with LeBrun on one thing. “At the same time, several teams have expressed significant interest in trading for him and offers have included a 1st round pick +.” And maybe that’s why Brock Nelson’s situation remains so precarious. With just days remaining till the deadline closes, Lou Lamoriello still seems to be on the fence.
Will the Islanders really trade Brock Nelson?
The 33-year-old NHL star is sitting on a perch. On the side, Nelson is looking at a possible trade. With multiple sources claiming that many teams, including division leaders like the Jets, showing genuine interest, that trade looks highly likely. What strengthens the trade argument further is the closing window and Lamoriello’s cryptic message.

Is trading Brock Nelson a mistake for the Islanders, or a necessary move for future success?

Lamorillo made his best effort to not announce his plans while praising Brock Nelson’s contribution and loyalty to the New York Islanders. However, he also ended his statement with a telling message. “It’s a business, isn’t it?” said the President of hockey operations at the Islanders. Yet, on the other side of the perch there’s also news about the team handing Nelson an extension.

A New York Times report stated that, as per sources, Lou Lamoriello was still trying to “hammer out a contract,” for Nelson on Wednesday. And it’s safe today that the NHL veteran has made a good case for the team to retain him. Beside turning up for the Islanders in big games, the 33-year-old has also hit personal milestones during the regular season.
Brock Nelson’s latest milestone came in the form of his 20th goal during the Islanders’ 3-2 win over the Winnipeg Jets. Nelson’s emotional reaction to the prospect of getting traded may also indicate his willingness to stay. Unfortunately, fans may have to hold their breath till the trade window closes on Friday to find out what happens.
