NHL fans, assemble. As you know, Brad Marchand, the Boston Bruins’ captain, is no stranger to drama. Whether it’s his chirping, dirty plays, or just his general ability to live rent-free in opponents’ heads, Marchand is always in the spotlight. But his latest quote? Yeah, Boston fans are not feeling it. Some are rolling their eyes, while others are straight-up fuming.
So what went down exactly? Well, it all started when @BR_OpenIce posted on X: “BRAD BLEEDS RED (via @WhatChaosShow).” The post included a quote from Brad Marchand himself: “PROBABLY SINCE BIRTH, I WANTED TO BE A CANADIAN GUY.” And, just like that, chaos sparked in. Talk about it, Bruins fans totally flooded X, calling out their captain for what some saw as a mere slip-up. The takes ranged from “Eh, whatever” to “Trade this man immediately.”
The 36-year-old Marchand’s reputation over the years has seen both sides of the coin: the good and the bad, even ugly. At first glance, Brad Marchand’s comment might seem like no big deal. But considering his eventful career, it’s easy to see why Boston fans are side-eyeing him.

Marchand has been eight times (28 games), for offenses ranging from elbowing to slew-footing. His most recent suspension came in 2022 when he was suspended for a career-high six games for taking a swing at Penguins goaltender Tristan Jarry and hitting him in the mask with his stick. Something like that doesn’t win you too many favors, does it?

Despite his controversies, Marchand is a key player for the Bruins, with 421 goals and 552 assists in his career, totaling 973 points as of 2025. But his aggressive style often overshadows his on-ice contributions. Either you love him or you really don’t. His highlight reel is equal parts insane goals and questionable hits. He’s very vocal about his participation in the international tournament, the 4-Nations Face-Off, alongside stars such as Connor McDavid, Sidney Crosby, and Nathan MacKinnon. But now, some Bruins fans are wondering: Does this guy even rock with us like that?
Boston fans react to Brad Marchand’s comment
Fans didn’t hold back, “The worst example of a hockey player. Plays dirty, attempts to injure, and is regularly voted the least respected guy in the league. When your own peers don’t respect you, that says a lot. My favorite part of every NHL season is watching him get eliminated.” The fan isn’t totally wrong about Marchand’s peers not respecting him. I mean, it really depends on how you want to look at it. In 2024, NHL players voted the Bruins captain the ‘winner’ of a rather confusing ‘honor’ for the third consecutive year. The honor in question? ‘Which player do you least enjoy facing but would want on your team?’
Another fan, (questioning everything): “Did anyone even ask him that? And if yes, are you serious? My God, media is getting worse and worse.” Fair point. Brad Marchand’s quote does feel kinda random. Was this a media trap? A joke? A glitch in the simulation? Either way, the internet ran with it. “Nothing about this punk*ss b*tch is Canadian. We should all be ashamed, this rat, who injured players on purpose many times, is allowed to wear the Red.” Again, Marchand’s 2018 elbow on Marcus Johansson left the forward concussed and was widely criticized with the department of player safety ruling that the hit was neither defensive or accidental.

“Well then quit playing for an American team and sign with a Canadian team in the offseason,” this fan served career advice. An overreaction? Marchand has spent his entire NHL career with the Boston Bruins, becoming a cornerstone of the franchise. While he’s expressed pride in representing Canada internationally, his loyalty to the Bruins has never been in question—until now. Another fan dropped a classic one-liner, “The dumbest person you know thinks this is a great quote.” Another harsh one, but… yeah. This does feel like one of those quotes you’d see on a motivational poster in a middle school gym.
So is this an overreaction or the real problem? At the end of the day, Marchand is the heart of the Bruins—whether you love him or hate him. But did he just fumble the bag with Boston fans? Probably not. This whole thing will most likely blow over the second Brad Marchand drops a clutch goal. Until then? The internet’s having a field day. What’s your take on this?
