“Everybody’s just hungry to continue to make the playoffs. That’s been our mindset all along, so nothing has really changed,” said Mark Kastelic before the Boston Bruins’ game with the Ottawa Senators. Well, he sounded bold, confident, and full of grit, right? But what happened exactly on the ice differs from what he had thought! What followed wasn’t just a battle for playoff hopes but a moment that left everyone talking.
In the heat of the game, Kastelic had a little fun—or at least, he thought he did. A harmless poke? Maybe. But a poke to the nose of Claude Giroux? That’s a different story. It was a fleeting moment, almost imperceptible, yet its impact on the tension was undeniable. Kastelic, with the same energy as his pregame words, was making his presence known. But hockey has a way of responding, and Giroux was far from done.
And then, it happened. With just 1:19 remaining, Giroux didn’t throw a punch, nor did he fire back with a hit—he did something much colder. With a quick and firm flick of the wrist, he replied with a firing puck into the empty net! And boom—that was the winning moment for the Senators. The goal, his 13th of the season, was the ultimate response.

Social media erupted, and Alex Adams summed it up perfectly with his post on X: “Giroux silences Mark Kastelic with an empty net goal. #Sens.” And the silence that followed wasn’t just from Kastelic, but from everyone who expected a different kind of reaction. Instead, Giroux let the scoreboard do the talking.

And that hashtag. #Sens, though, seemed like a simple word, but was powerful at the moment. It was a message to the Bruins, to doubters, and perhaps even to Kastelic himself. The Senators may have taken hits throughout the season, but if Giroux’s response proved anything, it’s that the best clap backs don’t come with fists—they come with goals.
But here’s the perfect irony. Kastelic’s words before the game painted a picture of the Bruins as a team refusing to back down. But in this battle of actions versus words, Giroux proved him wrong! His response wasn’t physical; it wasn’t verbal either, but very plain. When Kastelic said, “We’re not gonna just give up, even though we made some moves. We brought in a lot of good people. And I think we’re still a great hockey team,” he was addressing the changes within the Bruins’ roster while reinforcing the team’s resilience.
But in the context of reality, the Senators, despite roster changes, proved they weren’t just hanging on to a thread. They triumphed the season series against the Bruins with a 6-3 record, proving that their hunger for the playoffs was more than just mouthing off!

It was an ultimate win for the Ottawa Senators!
A statement game and a statement performance. With Drake Batherson leading the charge, netting two goals and an assist, the Senators perfectly cruised to a 6-3 victory over the Boston Bruins at the Canadian Tire Centre. “It was awesome,” Batherson said, giving credit where it’s due: “Mom made me some home-cooked meals yesterday, so she’s probably going to take all the credit for that.” With Batherson’s shining performance and a collective team effort, it was clear this wasn’t just a win, but a display of their resilience and drive.
Brady Tkachuk too extended his point streak to eight games, while Ridly Greig and Shane Pinto contributed with a goal and an assist each. And Linus Ullmark? Well, he truly turned heads with a jaw-dropping save late in the second period, that preserved the Senators’ lead! “Oh my god, he’s such a stud,” said Ottawa defenseman Tyler Kleven. After all, he became an essential part of the team by winning a lot of games for the Senators. And, of course, at the end of it was Giroux who didn’t just hit an empty goal, but left a stunning remark on the Bruins’ loss by giving a tough reply to Kastelic!
On the flip side, the Bruins couldn’t seem to find their rhythm. “We just weren’t good enough in most of the facets in the first period,” said Boston coach Joe Sacco. Their lack of sharpness and poor execution gave the Senators an opening to seize control early, and they never let their lead slide. As the Senators clinched their fifth straight victory, it wasn’t just about the scoreboard — it was about proving they had the heart and determination to bounce back after a tough stretch. A well-deserved victory that had everyone asking for what’s next!
