Preparations for the 2026 Winter Olympics, to be held in Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy, have already begun. As part of that, the NHL is attempting to sort out ruffled feathers. The NHL Players’ Association, the International Olympic Committee, and the International Ice Hockey Federation are presently engaged in conversation with the league. As those disputes are being contemplated, a future Hockey Hall of Fame candidate made an announcement. That player was Joe Thornton.
Joe Thornton, fondly called Jumbo, is a character that does not divide opinion. One would be hard-pressed to find anybody who didn’t like him. That does not mean it is impossible. It’s possible the Dallas Stars’ Jamie Benn remembers him less fondly in comparison. The pair engaged in one of the most gruesome brawls on the rink in recent times. That is beside the point. Thornton is almost universally described as unassuming and friendly. He recently announced his retirement after 24 seasons in the NFL.

Thought you guys would?ve figured it out sooner, but you kept asking. So, here I am, retiring. I?ve so much love for the game of hockey, and countless number of people that helped this kid?s dream become a reality. And if you?re looking for me, you know where to find me. I?ll be at the rink. Peace and love!“

Joe Thornton played 1714 games in the NHL for the Sharks and the Boston Bruins, among others. Thornton’s numbers from those games are phenomenal. It is believed they would make him a sure shot for addition to the Hockey Hall of Fame. He scored 1539 points, comprising 430 goals and 1109 assists, which is the 12th-highest tally in the league’s history. The NHL will look to give him a fitting farewell at their earliest convenience. For the moment, they have a full plate.

The NHL wants its players in the Olympic games in Milan
The NHL is trying to ensure its players will be permitted to participate in the 2026 Winter Olympics. Primary among the issues in the way is getting the IOC and the IIHF to cover both the NHL player travel and insurance costs. The NHL and the NHLPA hope for a swift resolution to this in the New Year. Their argument is that the Olympics must feature the best of the best in every discipline, including hockey. Assuming some common ground is reached, there is one who will not be lining up then.
