Super Bowl fever has taken over the States as fans and celebrities gear up for football’s biggest annual celebrations. The two-time consecutive champions Kansas Chiefs have once again found their way to the finals, and their opponents are former champions the Philadelphia Eagle. Naturally, everyone’s taking their pick, including Alexander Ovechkin & rest of the Washington Capitals

Earlier, the Washington Capitals posted a video where they asked nearly the entire roster the same question. “Who’s your Super Bowl pick?” they asked as the players. However, in a surprising outcome, Ovechkin and several others picked the state that’s their rival in the NHL’s Metropolitan Division.

While Capitals coach Spencer Carbery took a neutral stance, saying “I’m not a huge fan of either team,” the others weren’t so diplomatic. In fact, the Washington Capitals captain and biggest star Alexander Ovechkin picked the Philadelphia Eagles over Kansas. “I’ll go, Philly,”  said the 39-year-old NHL icon. What may sound even more shocking is the majority agreed with Ovechkin.

While the Capitals posted, “Unfortunately, both teams can’t lose,” tallying up the votes revealed a different result. 12 Washington Capitals members voted for The Birds, while only seven voted for the defending NFL Super Bowl champions. However, not everyone was ready to put aside their rivalry with a Philadelphian team like Alex Ovechkin did.

Among all the players who didn’t vote for the Eagles, right-wing forward Tom Wilson had the strongest reaction. “I’m not cheering for Philly…” said the NHL star, followed by an aggressive stick tap. However, there may be a good reason why Ovechkin picked the Eagles.

In what could only be described as a coincidence, both the Philadelphia Eagles and the Washington Capitals have won the ultimate prize in their respective sports only once. What more? Even The Birds’ Super Bowl-winning season and the Capitals’ Stanley Cup-winning seasons are tied together. The Eagles won Super Bowl 52 in February 2018, while the Capitals won the Stanley Cup in May of the same year.

While Alexander Ovechkin didn’t elaborate if he chose the Philadelphia Eagles based on his wild coincidence, some fans certainly did. Well guys, the last time the Eagles won the Super Bowl, the Caps won the Stanley Cup a few months later. I’m rooting for the Eagles,” commented the fan. Yet, coincidences aside, the hype certainly belongs to the Chiefs.

Just as Ovechkin is chasing NHL history and needs to score only 16 goals to beat Wayne Gretzky’s goal-scoring record, Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs are also gunning for glory. After winning two back-to-back Super Bowls, the Kansas Chiefs are on the cusp of making history. That’s because no other team in history has won three Super Bowls in a row. However, only time will tell if they will succeed. Whom are you rooting for?
