Scuffles and scrimmages are a daily occurrence on the hockey rink. Some of them might get overlooked. However, certain instances of violation will land the players with a fine, or even worse. It could be considered grounds for suspension. Dylan Larkin of the Detroit Red Wings narrowly escaped suspension due to cross-checking. Not only did it earn him a penalty for misconduct, but it resulted in a review by the NHL Department of Player Safety.
Post the review by the concerned authority, he was ordered to pay a hefty fine. It is safe to say that many fans were outraged by the actions. The majority consensus seemed to be that the fine was too hefty for the nature and extent of the infraction.

According to the official NHL website, the incident took place after 12:37 minutes of the first period, with the Wings leading by 1–0. When the news of Larking being fined was announced on Facebook, fans were definitely not happy with the outcome. While the majority of the public called it out as “BS”, one of them commented, “For a hit that barely marked Oshie’s chin and left him looking perky & ready to go. SO much BS.🙄 #LGRW ❤️🏒❤️”

Another fan expressed a similar sentiment by saying, “That is just BS! And someone needs to give Oshie an Oscar for his performance. He got exactly what he wanted. Ovi was out he needed to level the playing field. Time for him to retire if he has to do this because he can’t play the same game as the young ones” Followers repeatedly expressed the unfairness of the fine. One fan wrote, “This is an excessive penalty and also extremely inconsistent.” Another fan added, “It was high sticking penalty at worst, the rest is just the disdain show towards the Wings for years.”
Red Wings fans also commented that it was clear the hit was not big enough to warrant the reaction given by Oshie. Someone commented, “So obvious it wasn’t an intentional hit to the face. Oshie’s arm came up to block the fair check, and deflected the stick into his own face instead. You could tell by Larkin’s reaction, wanting to check on Oshie, that he was surprised as well by where it landed.” However, the amount of the fine was not an ordinary number.

Larking gets a penalty fine that is the highest recorded under CBA
It seemed by Larkin’s reaction that the situation might have been elevated because of Oshie’s arm touching his stick as well. So, the hit could have been unintentional. But because it looked like Larking cross-checked Oshie in the face, he got a $5000 fine. This is the highest amount that a player can be fined under the Collective Bargaining Agreement. The fine will go to the Players’ Emergency Assistance Fund.
