“That Bill Is Going to…”: Despite His $100 Million Net Worth, Wayne Gretzky’s Son-in-Law Dustin Johnson Once Refused to Pay for His Biggest Day

Paulina Gretzky, daughter of hockey legend Wayne Gretzky, and Dustin Johnson’s engagement happened in 2013. However, the couple tied the knot earlier this year. During their long engagement, Dustin and Paulina planned their marriage multiple times, but each time, things fell apart. And in 2016, Dustin once humorously opened up about the delays claiming it doesn’t matters to him.

Wayne Gretzky is arguably the greatest ice hockey player of all time but also loves playing golf. Over the years, Wayne and Dustin developed a great friendship. However, Wayne probably would’ve been quite upset if he learned what Dustin had planned for him if the wedding happened in 2016.

What Dustin planned to do with Wayne Gretzky?

In 2016, USA Today caught up with Dustin Johnson shortly after he had won the 2016 U. S. Open. The previous year he had finished in 2nd place. During the conversation, Dustin revealed he and finance Paulina Gretzky had planned their marriage for fall 2015. However, their busy schedule interfered with the couple’s plans to tie the knot.

Johnson also revealed they might try again around the end of 2016. So USA Today asked Johnson if the wedding would be “more extravagant” because of the delay. However, Johnson smiled before saying it won’t matter. “Don’t matter to me. That bill is going to Wayne,” said the former world no. 1 ranked golfer.

Wayne Gretzky first met Dustin Johnson in 2012 at a charity event that involved golfing. Wayne and Dustin have also played golf as partners at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. Besides competing, the duo frequents Sherwood Country Club in California for some relaxed golfing sessions. Like his daughter, Wayne is a big supporter of his son-in-law.

Since their engagement, Paulina became a regular sight at Johnson’s golf competitions. She even traveled overseas with Dustin to support him. Even today, Paulina is always there to watch her husband play. A top golfer, Johnson has won many competitions and is worth $100 million. This year, in late October, Johnson left the PGA Tour to join the LIV Golf tour.  

The long-awaited wedding

After nearly ten years of engagement, Paulina and Dustin married one another on April 23, 2022. The couple had a grand but private wedding with family and those closest to them. The wedding took place at Blackberry Farm, away from the eyes of the paparazzi. The farm is about a three-hour drive from Nashville.

Paulina and Dustin have two children. Their elder son, Tatum Gretzky Johnson, was born in 2015, and their younger son, River Jones Johnson, was born in 2017.

While Dustin may have refused to pay for his wedding in 2016, it was probably nothing more than a joke.
