With each passing year, the NFL gives more and more reasons to get etched to it. Some games give us reasons to discuss, some give us moments to recall for years. One such game that’s been played back in 2015 between the New England Patriots and Indianapolis Colts still finds its way to the fans’ attention. It has also been widely regarded as one of the most bizarre plays in NFL history.
The match happened back in the days when two perennial playoff contenders with their newly developed rivalry over the years came face to face. Being one of the Patriots fans, Dave Portnoy recently recalled the eye-watering blunder.

In the video, Cris Collinsworth, the analyst could be heard responding to his fellow commentator Al Michaels’s disgusted shout – “What in the world?” Collinsworth said, “There were three, four, five guys around two players. That was insane. You’ve got a guy on either side of him. What are you doing here? They don’t even try to run a play. We’ve seen a lot of bizarre stuff. I’ve never seen anything more bizarre than that.”
Colts Catastrophe: As it happened
It was October 18, 2015, when the Colts had a face-off against the Patriots. The Colts were trailing by six points and were on their 37-yard line with a fourth-and-three. To take the daring leap, the Colts tried attempting a fake punt formation. There stood Griff Whalen, the wide receiver acting as the new center, with safety Colt Anderson right behind him as the new quarterback. The stage was set for a nerve-wrenching play that would go down in history.
But then chaos struck. Needing just three yards for a first down, the Patriots had five defenders encircling the ball. As he tried to make the bold move, Anderson got immediately tackled by the Patriots for a loss. The Patriots declined the illegal formation penalty right away, which was called on the Colts. This dramatic play, now known as the ‘Colts Catastrophe’, is widely regarded as one of the most bizarre plays in NFL history due to its poor execution and outcome. Had it not taken place eight years back today, we would have one less renaissance.
