At the USATF Indoor Championship, a 20-year-old athlete with a career-threatening injury made a remarkable comeback, thanks to her sporting genes inherited from her parents, Randall and Felicity Cunningham. Her inspiring story was showcased at the event.

Last year, in the USATF indoor championship, with her seventh national title on the trot, she could match up with the legendary Eleanor Montgomery. This year, Vashti Cunningham was on the same road again, leading to the USATF indoor championship.

Participating from the elite camp of Nike Red Bull, Vashti Cunningham didn’t face many challenges to defend her USATF indoor championship title in the high jump in 2024. From the starting point, she held the top position at the Albuquerque Convention Center. On the other hand, the fight was between JaiCieonna Gero-Holt and Cierra Allphin for the remaining two positions. But as the game progressed to the final section, the fight was centered between Cunningham and Gero-Holt. Eventually, as USATF published the result on its website, Cunningham stopped at 1.92, whereas Gero-Holt’s personal best sent her to the runner-up position.

The BYU athlete had to remain satisfied with the third position with a 1.85 lengthened jump. For the table topper in the USATF indoor championship high jump contest, this was her second contention in the Olympic year, after the Millrose Games last week. There, the NFL daughter claimed a high 1.97-meter jump to take the runner-up position. However, today Vashti Cunningham’s jump was a little short but enough to send her to the top position of the podium. But for the Nike pro, the dissipating situation only improved with her father’s help from the Philadelphia Eagles’ legendary division. And thus, her Olympic dreams that originated in 2016 still continue!

Advancing toward the Olympic dream with the healing ankle

For the USATF indoor championship winner, the Olympic dream started when she was in her high school in Nevada. In the Rio Olympics trial, she jumped an ever-reaching 1.97m to burst into the final counting. However, the then 18-year-old couldn’t reflect the same performance in the final run. In 2019, Vashti made a chance to carve her name in history by earning the bronze medal at the Doha World contest. But in the same year, she had to go through an operation to heal her ankle. Since then, Randall Cunningham has become his daughter’s full-time coach, crafting her return story on the track.

“It got tough, all the one-on-one time, doing all the hard work with no teammates and no one to joke around with,” was Vashti’s take on the situation. But here she is, drifting toward her Olympic dream again, peeling titles one after another.
