Many athletes who worked with him closely even recited anecdotes from Madden’s life. One of those sportsmen is none other than former Raiders player, Matt Millen. He reminisced about John Madden’s infamous rule.

Earlier this year, Millen talked about the three rules that Madden had for his football players. Interestingly, those rules weren’t limited to NFL players only. Once, the NHL GOAT, Wayne Gretzky, also fell prey to Madden’s rules.
Wayne Gretzky once broke John Madden’s Infamous Rule
In the interview with The Athletic, Matt Millen recalled the 3 most important rules that John Madden framed for his players. “Madden was known for having three rules for his football players”, said Millen. He further elaborated on those rules, “No. 1: “Be on time.” No. 2: “Pay attention.” And No. 3: “Play like hell when I tell you to.””

The rules saga does not end here. Matt further explained Madden’s lesser-known rule, which is “Nobody takes a dump”. However, the golden rule was indeed broken by Millen, Fox producer Richie Zyontz, and the hockey legend, Wayne Gretzky.
Although based on Matt’s talk, Madden never got over the offense, he gave Gretzky a pass. While he prohibited Millen and Zyontz to live their mischief down. Millen stated, “Somehow, Wayne Gretzky got a pass. Richie and I bore the brunt, but in particular, it was me because I broke the rule a block away from the hotel. He always said he had to carry that turd around the rest of the country.”
John Madden: A Player, A Coach, and A Commentator
John Madden graced the sport of football by not only playing the sport but also by coaching many generations of players. He even holds the highest winning percentage among other NFL coaches. Madden coached around 100 games and is highly regarded for every player’s commendable winning spree. He also was a sports commentator. His exceptional commentary even earned him 16 Sports Emmy Awards.
