The Nebraska Cornhuskers faced the Wisconsin Badgers at the Devaney Center with both teams entering the match undefeated. Their streaks numbered 18 matches each. It was a clash between the nationally ranked top two collegiate women’s volleyball teams in the United States. The Badgers were placed first on that list, as per the AVCA poll dated October 16, 2023. That is sure to change after the Cornhuskers emerged victorious, sending Barstool Sports owner Dave Portnoy into raptures.
The Cornhuskers won a thrilling five-set encounter 25-22, 17-25, 20-25, 26-24, and 15-13. According to the NCAA website, the Devaney Center played host to a record standing-room-only crowd totaling 9,198. That beat the previous record of 8,656 fans at a game. Moreover, it was the Cornhuskers’ 314th consecutive sold-out match on home turf.

Dave Portnoy took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to express his delight at the Cornhuskers’ achievement. He shared a post from the official Nebraska Volleyball handle. The post celebrated a new number one in the AVCA rankings. There was a picture containing a statistical comparison between both sides. To that, he added the words, “Let’s go!!!! @_willcompton.” Portnoy tagged one notable University of Nebraska-Lincoln graduate in the post.

Portnoy, a Michigan State alum, does not have much riding on the Cornhuskers’ success at first glance. A little further digging reveals more details. One of the Barstool Sports shows is the Bussin’ With The Boys podcast. That is hosted by football players Taylor Lewan and Will Compton. Lewan is an offensive tackle who is currently a free agent. Compton, on the other hand, is a linebacker for the Las Vegas Raiders. And Compton is a University of Nebraska-Lincoln alum. With this win, the Nebraska Cornhuskers have now extended their unbeaten streak.

Cornhuskers extend their unbeaten streak further
The Cornhuskers ended the Badgers’ unbeaten streak at 18 matches. Simultaneously, they extended their own unbeaten record to 19 matches. Wisconsin held onto the top spot in the AVCA rankings from week one. They would relinquish it following Nebraska’s win, in all likelihood. As Dave Portnoy shared, a change in the rankings is being expected.

The Cornhuskers will look to further extend their streak. They host the Maryland Terrapins next Friday. The Terrapins are 14-8 overall for the season. Their current streak totals just one win, which came against the Iowa Hawkeyes. Dave Portnoy, among others, will expect the Cornhuskers to stay atop the rankings as they had to climb up from number five at the start of the season. It remains to be seen if they can add to their five NCAA championships this season while they’re placed number 1 now.
