Dave Portnoy goes to war for his alma mater. The University of Michigan presently finds itself mired in controversy. Alongside an ongoing NCAA investigation, the Big Ten suspended the Michigan Wolverines head coach Jim Harbaugh. Harbaugh will miss the rest of the Wolverines’ regular season games as they bid to reach the playoffs.

Jim Harbaugh will be absent from the sidelines for the games against the Penn State Nittany Lions, the Maryland Terrapins, and arch-rivals the Ohio State Buckeyes. Not every response to the suspension was conciliatory. In fact, some were outright celebratory and meant to trigger Michigan fans. One such tweet rubbed Dave Portnoy the wrong way. He responded in kind.

The X handle of Hard Rock Bet tweeted that Jim Harbaugh has had more suspensions than Bowl wins at Michigan. In fact, Harbaugh’s record in the post-season is 1-6 at his current employers. He also received a three-game suspension at the commencement of the season. While that was self-imposed, this came from the Big Ten, the conference with which the Wolverines are affiliated. Portnoy responded with the words, “Hard Rock Bet has been sued more times than days active.”

The Michigan Wolverines are presently 9-0 for the season. Up next, they travel to the home of the 8-1 Nittany Lions. After that, they travel once more to the home of the Terrapins. Their final game of the regular season sees them take on the Buckeyes on home turf. The Buckeyes are also presently 9-0 so far. Harbaugh will be missing from all three games. Dave Portnoy was not the only Michigan alum to respond to this news.

Tom Brady, the most celebrated player in NFL history and University of Michigan graduate, also took to X. He tweeted the same one-word response that came from a majority of players on Harbaugh’s roster, namely, “Bet.” One of them was the current Michigan quarterback and potential Heisman Trophy candidate J.J. McCarthy. Dave Portnoy, in turn, called it a rallying cry for the Michigan faithful.

Dave Portnoy had predicted, not that long ago, that a footballing dynasty was in the making at Michigan Stadium. It remains to be seen if the players step up in their coach’s absence and prove Portnoy right. The Wolverines are ranked the second-best team in the conference at present. If they can overcome this adversity foisted upon them, they will rightly be exalted. Only time will tell if that proves to be the case.
