Dave Portnoy has always defended his alma mater. Portnoy is a University of Michigan alum and rates their football team highly and for good reason. The Michigan Wolverines are unbeaten eight games into the season. They average a little over 40 points per game and, as per Portnoy, are very much a dynasty in the making. Their performance on Saturday night left no doubt as to that.
Dave Portnoy watched on as the Wolverines faced a familiar side in the Michigan State Spartans. The Spartans lost 49-0. In fact, only one team registered double digits against the Wolverines. That was the Minnesota Golden Gophers. Their dominance in the Big 10 East is almost without parallel. They will face the 7-0 Ohio State Buckeyes in the final game of the regular season. The Buckeyes are nationally ranked just behind the Wolverines. If the Wolverines are in the same mood as they were in this game, the Buckeyes will have their hands full.

As early as five minutes into the second quarter, the Wolverines led by three touchdowns. Knowing full well the capabilities of their current roster, Dave Portnoy had a request to make of the referees. He took to X, formerly called Twitter, and pled his case for ending the game as early as possible. Portnoy wrote, “As a Michigan Man I am begging the refs to call this game. We are family. They are little brother. We all know we can hang 100 on Sparty if we want. It’s not worth embarrassing them like this. Let them have their dignity. Right @kellierowe?”

Dave Portnoy made the argument that the teams from Michigan were part of a larger family. He posited the Spartans were the Wolverines’ little brothers. Portnoy added the Wolverines could easily reach triple digits against the Spartans if the fancy took them. Simultaneously, he emphasized they did not want to embarrass their opponents. He wanted them to leave with their dignity. Portnoy also tagged FOX 2 Detroit reporter Kellie Rowe, a Michigan State University graduate, in the post. While sterner on-field tests might lie in wait, the Wolverines have braved a lot so far.

Not that long ago, Wolverines’ coach Jim Harbaugh served a three-game suspension for NCAA recruiting infractions. A few days ago, it was disclosed the Wolverines were under NCAA investigation for allegedly stealing opponents’ play-calling signs. At the same time, they have won a school-record 20 consecutive conference games since losing to the same team about two years ago. This game constituted a picture-perfect response.

The Wolverines scored two touchdowns in each of the first three quarters. Their seventh and final touchdown arrived in the dying seconds of the match. Starting quarterback J. J. McCarthy had a stellar game. He completed 21 of his 27 attempted passes. McCarthy also threw a career-high four touchdowns overall. Despite what ESPN lauds as their most complete performance to date, McCarthy promised they were yet to peak. In the end, they did not add too much gloss to their win.

Dave Portnoy displayed a little magnanimity in the face of his team’s dominant performance. He is proud of both his roots and to be an alum of the University of Michigan. Having stated much the same on many an occasion, Portnoy reveled in his team’s recent successes. Ranked the second-best team in the country at present, it remains to be seen how far they go this season.
