Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes made a crucial decision in their game against the New York Jets that had a massive impact on bettors across the nation. Mahomes chose to slide down at the Jets’ 2-yard line instead of scoring a touchdown and extra point. This move secured a 23-20 win for the Chiefs but prevented them from covering the 8-point spread and Dave wasn’t happy about this at all.

Barstool Sports’ CEO Dave Portnoy is well-known for his scathing criticism and comments when it comes to NFL players. Usually, he smooths his sharp words around the edges but this time he went ALL IN. As soon as the ‘king of controversy’ read the news on Mahome’s move costing millions of dollars in losses, he put Mahomes on blast.

To call Dave an outspoken internet personality would be an understatement. His anger sent shockwaves across Twitter (now X), “I get that sliding was theoretically the right move by Maholmes. BUT it’s not. Kansas is a legal gambling state. He let down all his fans. He stole money right out of their wallets. Now they can’t afford dinner. Disgusting.” Dave posted with a hashtag denoting what he believes to be a collective sentiment.

On Sunday, the New York Jets faced tough opposition from the Kansas City Chiefs in a nail-biting game. Mahomes slid down at the Jets’ 2-yard line with the Chiefs ahead of the Jets 23-20. Most bettors had put their money on Kansas City as 7.5-point favorites at the game. “96% of all bettors were on the Chiefs’ spread, which waffled between -7.5 and -9 at the sportsbook,” according to a report of ActionNetwork. This play, made the Chiefs fans happy when they won against the New York Jets. However, the same can’t be said about sports betting.

In that situation, Mahomes’ throwing for a touchdown and an extra point would have seen the Chiefs cover the spread in comfort with many winning bettors at Caesars Sportsbook. But that call, where he slid for the touchdown instead of running out the clock, cost about $80 million for the spread on the game between the Kansas City Chiefs and New York Jets and more for others.

In the 2023 NFL season, Patrick Mahomes who is famously renowned for his remarkable passing abilities, hit the headlines on several media platforms. The Kansas City Chiefs renegotiated Patrick’s contract on 18 September, he ultimately secured a record-breaking $210.6 million over the years 2023 to 2026. On the field, Mahomes keeps setting more records- in only 84 starts he reached a double-century of touchdowns, becoming the quickest in NFL history to do so.

He also broke a franchise record for most rushing yards for a quarterback set by Alex Smith, with 51 yards in a single match. However, this did not come without its trials and Mahomes had a rough time on the field when he played against the New York Jets. He picked two interceptions against the Jets while posting a less-than-impressive 63.6 passer rating. But he guided the Chiefs to win by only three points, 23-20.

In the end, Mahomes’ smart play to slide instead of scoring a touchdown disappointed many bettors who had favored the favorites. Sportsbook customers expressed their frustration, and some sportsbooks even had to send their ticket writers home early because there were no winning Jets tickets to cash. Mahomes’ move prevented what could have been the best Sunday of the season for the betting public. So, Dave’s anger is somewhat justified. But, do you think Dave went too harsh on Partick Mahomes?
