What was supposed to be a celebration of a decade-long tradition turned into a fiasco for Dave Portnoy. The founder of Barstool Sports and a passionate horse racing fan met with an unfortunate fate. After being a long admirer of the derby, a try for luck did not go a long way as he found an early go home in his latest adventure.
Portnoy, who has been attending the Breeder’s Cup since 2014, was knocked out of the event within minutes of his arrival, leaving his fans and followers baffled and amused. For Portnoy, a man known for his bold commentary and larger-than-life personality, this unexpected exit only adds to his legend.
Quick quit for Dave Portnoy
Dave Portnoy, known for his candid and often humorous commentary on sports and pop culture, took to Twitter to announce his exit. Earlier he looked pretty confident and charming before the race started. But soon after finding his fate when his horse disappointed him, he can’t have it more. He took to X and posted a video on his disappointment and resentment.

I am officially out of the contest. My last 1k was on 12-1 cold exacta in last race. Things are bad. It’s too early to be reloading but here we are. @elio82 #BreedersCup pic.twitter.com/I5SOOtZvyB

He said, “Hey, I am out of the Breeders Cup challenge, the fastest exit ever. My last 1k was on 12-1 cold, the one for life to me. Sure to pass the two to get second I’ll be right back in it, instead, I’m on the verge of going broke.” Earlier Dave took his mate from Barstool, Elio Imbornone to the race and let him bet on his behalf.
Portnoy continued and said, “Breeder’s Cup 2023, This is our tenth year in the syndicate. Elio never wanna race in the Breeders Cup challenge. I’ve been pretty good… this is year ten, we’ll see how long we last. I like you to win one race in BC.” Little did he know of the outcome, he seemed relaxed and lauding for his tenth-year mark at the Breeders Cup.
His long love for horses
However, the bet did not go for Dave Portnoy as it came with an upsetting loss of some thousand dollars. And this mere defeat of luck could hardly outshine his love for horse racing. It traces back to his childhood when his father introduced him to Rockingham Park in New Hampshire. Since then, born for everything sports, he developed a keen interest in animal sport.
Fresh back to today, he owns parts of six horses, including Smokeshow City, a thoroughbred racehorse that has a win and a second in six career starts. Dave Portnoy has also expressed his desire to win a race with a horse he owns at his favorite racetrack, Saratoga. His involvement in horse racing is something new apart from his rigorous coverage of NFL issues, games, and controversies, which also is a source of content for his popular website, Barstool Sports.
For a person like him, it’s tough to guess his next move. At one moment he is at the podium discussing Michigan, and at times at the beach chilling with the other. Irrespective of the field, his range of vocal ranges from college football to equestrian and far beyond that. Despite the unexpected exit, Portnoy will be back soon with some of his out-of-expectations reactions.
