Patrick Mahomes made a call at the end of an NFL game that cost bettors millions. In a game where the Kansas City Chiefs beat the New York Jets 23-20 after blowing a 17-point lead from the first quarter, quarterback Mahomes’s tail-end decision became an apple of discord. Sliding instead of scoring a touchdown drew Barstool President Dave Portnoy’s ire, who wasted no time to express his displeasure right after that game.

The spread on the game was that the Chiefs would win by at least a touchdown. With seconds remaining on the clock, Mahomes could have made that happen. Instead, he made the safe choice to slide and run out the clock, avoiding the possibility of a scrimmage as well as potential injuries. Post-game moments witnessed Portnoy to be visibly upset, unveiling an alternative in the form of an MLB betting system.

Pitching in for pitchers in MLB betting?

In a nutshell, Portnoy’s system is called the S.H.O.V.E. system. He went on to clarify that the system calls for backing a shover. As he defined it, a shover is a well-built pitcher from Texas. However, the biggest defining characteristic of a shover is that their finesse pitch is their fastball. Shovers tend to dominate during the playoffs, according to Portnoy. When it comes to winning a baseball game, they look to overpower their opposition instead of dealing with them. Portnoy noted that finding shovers and backing them to deliver the goods is his new system.

Dave Portnoy also listed a few pitchers he felt fell into that bracket. Among those are Nathan Eovaldi, Madison Bumgardner, and Josh Beckett. All the pitchers Portnoy mentioned, have earned themselves quite a name in the position. A few months back, Talkin’ Baseball put up a post with a picture of Texas Rangers pitcher Eovaldi with the caption, “Nathan Eovaldi continues to SHOVE”. In MLB, the pitchers basically strikeout the batter to make them walk to the dugout. And pitchers having the most strikeouts can be called shoving. The more the strikeouts, the more worthy the pitcher becomes. Probably this is the reason Portnoy vouched for them.

Patrick Mahomes is not a shover

Patrick Mahomes is from Texas, much like every shover listed. Though he plays a different sport, it is unlikely that Dave Portnoy considers Patrick Mahomes a shover. Mahomes opted for the decidedly smart option with just seconds left. Whereas a shover might have run the extra yards for a touchdown and the subsequent play. Therefore, Mahomes would not fit the definition.

The entire episode of Mahomes’ slide and its aftereffect once again turns the spotlight on the complexity of sports betting. And when it comes to betting, even the best of the scorelines may not pose as the best possible outcome for the bettors. During the match, bettors who bet on the Chiefs to cover as 7.5-point favorites for “Sunday Night Football”, lost millions of dollars in spite of the team winning. Whereas, Mahomes scoring a touchdown would have put the Chiefs ahead by at least nine points, and the team would have been in a position to cover.
