Marshawn Lynch and Russell Wilson played together for four seasons with the Seattle Seahawks. They were teammates between 2012 and 2015, and once more in 2019. Together, they won the Super Bowl XLVIII under the stewardship of Pete Carroll. In that game, Lynch scored one touchdown, with Wilson throwing two more as the Seahawks beat the Denver Broncos 43-8.

The pair achieved success together on the field. Off it, however, they did not have the same chemistry, as Marshawn Lynch revealed to Shannon Sharpe. In fact, Lynch recalls having just one conversation with the quarterback. Even that did not go well by any stretch of the imagination. Lynch was left dumbfounded after he had initiated a conversation between the pair with the best of intentions. The experience left a poor taste in his mouth.

Wilson was just a different animal

Marshawn Lynch considered Russell Wilson “just a quarterback.” He pointed out that to him, Wilson was a good choice for the position. As he put it, “I’d take Russ and I’ll put him right at quarterback, then I’d rock with him. Because I’ve done that.” The question of whether they ever got together off the field to party, shoot the breeze, and so on, was met with stony silence. As Lynch pointed out, he could not even pick up the phone and call Wilson. He said, “I can’t pick up the phone and call him. I don’t have his number.”

One game against a weakened Tennessee Titans in 2013 highlighted that best. Russell Wilson did not have a good game though the Seahawks won. Marshawn Lynch thought it would be good to ring him up. He received a call from a blocked number. As he found out later, that was Wilson. He noted, “I called him back. I think it was the first time I tried to have a conversation with him. I know you didn’t have the game you wanted to have but check it out. That’s what I’m here for. And if the shoe is on the other foot, I expect for it to be the same way. I’m here for you and you’re here for me. And his response to me, I was like, what the f**k. I tried telling him again, I’m here for you and we’re gonna rock.”

Another problem starring Wilson, per Marshawn Lynch

Marshawn Lynch refused to divulge the words that Wilson spoke during that fateful call. That was not the only situation that arose concerning Wilson. After a practice session, some players felt that Pete Carroll did not hold Wilson to the same standards as the rest of them. Post that, Carroll instituted a new rule. Lynch pointed out that the rest of the players were strictly discouraged from talking to Wilson directly.

Lynch pointed out he belonged to a team that did not discourage open lines of communication. He was troubled by the change in team rules. Lynch said, “Anybody can go [and talk to anyone else]. It was that kind of a team. You’re putting him on a pedestal or outside of the box and he doesn’t have to be held accountable to the same things that we do. What the f**k is that?”

Marshawn Lynch and Russell Wilson do not share the sort of camaraderie expected of teammates in a championship-winning team. Lynch could recall having just one conversation with the quarterback and that was no success. That was not the only incident with Russell that left Lynch feeling sour. He does not have much in the way of fond memories of the time they rubbed shoulders. Lynch has since retired while Wilson moved to the Broncos.
