Shannon Sharpe tweeted on Sunday night that he did not get to see the Dallas Cowboys’ “historic” defense in action. The San Francisco 49ers ran through said defense to record a 42-10 win at the Levi’s Stadium on that occasion. Most recently, Sharpe was a guest on ESPN’s First Take. Stephen A. Smith, who predicted that quarterback Dak Prescott would throw two interceptions, sported a cowboy hat during the show.

Shannon Sharpe launched into a passionate offensive against the Cowboys’ defense on First Take. According to the former NFL tight end, the Cowboys’ offense relies too much on scoop-and-scores and pick-sixes. He further noted their downfall was of their own making. As he pointed out, the result was to be expected given Prescott was forced to play every down and possession the Cowboys had.

“Historic” defense got whipped, per Shannon Sharpe

All week long, the talk leading up to the game referred to the Cowboys’ defense as “historic.” According to Shannon Sharpe, however, the 49ers went through it like William T. Sherman through Georgia during the Civil War. Sherman’s forces famously operated behind enemy lines Sans a supply line. They also implemented a scorched-earth policy to weaken the Confederacy’s war machine, according to the Encyclopedia Britannica.

In Shannon Sharpe’s words, “Now, all I heard last week, and they were playing it up in the media, this’ll be the first time in 630 days since they drafted Tyler Smith, #1, that offensive line will be intact. And they got whipped. They got whipped. That defense, that historic defense that everybody’s been yapping about, got ran through like Sherman went through Georgia. The Cowboys are who we thought they were. And the 49ers didn’t let them off the hook.”

Unlike the 2000 Ravens, they could not touch the opposing quarterback

According to linebacker Micah Parsons, the Cowboys’ current defense was similar to the vaunted 2000 Baltimore Ravens. The Ravens won Super Bowl XXXV after a 12-4 record posted during the regular season. Shannon Sharpe wasted no time in dismantling that claim. Sharpe noted it was up to those watching to term the defense “historic” after they achieved something by season’s end.

As Shannon Sharpe put it, “All I heard, we’ve got a historic defense, we have the ability to be the Ravens, we’ve got the ability to be this and this and this. Normally what happens, when teams have the historic defense, they don’t tell you about it in the season. We talk about it after it’s done. Let us, let the media, let the people who do this for a living tell you how great you are after you’ve done something. Now, I want you to tell me what you’ve done.”

Sharpe further noted it was easy to play defense after the offense ran up the score. Unfortunately, he pointed out Prescott’s DNA had turnovers inscribed in it, no matter the claims made by Cowboys’ owner Jerry Jones to the contrary. Shannon Sharpe quoted Maury Povich and called Prescott “that interception’s father. You turned the ball over because you’re forced to play every possession. You can’t just put the ball in Tony Pollard’s belly. You can’t just rely on Micah Parsons to get a sack.”

Shannon Sharpe further added that not one of the Cowboys’ defensive lines reached opposing quarterback Brock Purdy. He said, “Did anybody touch Brock Purdy’s hand except the coin toss at the start of the game? Did anybody touch him? ‘Cause I didn’t see it. What happened was what I thought would happen if they didn’t get picks and scoop-and-scores and the special team couldn’t put them on the short field. The Cowboys are who we thought they were, and when you make them play, and you don’t turn the ball over, they can be had in a very big way.”

For all the “historic” talk surrounding the Cowboys’ defense, they fell like ninepins in front of the 49ers, as per Shannon Sharpe. Sharpe commented they should leave the praise to those watching on. Simultaneously, they ought to focus on doing something praiseworthy. It remains to be seen how the Cowboys bounce back from this mauling, if at all.
