Shannon Sharpe and Chad Johnson made a name for themselves during their NFL playing days. A Hall of Famer, Sharpe was a tight end who spent the majority of his career with the Denver Broncos. He was an eight-time Pro-Bowl selection and a four-time All-Pro. Johnson was a wide receiver who spent ten seasons with the Cincinnati Bengals. He was a six-time Pro-Bowl selection and a two-time All-Pro. In short, they know quality when they see it. They have seen it in San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy.
The 49ers most recently beat the Dallas Cowboys 42-10 on Sunday at the Levi’s Stadium. Ahead of that clash, on ESPN’s First Take, Stephen A. Smith called Purdy one of the most efficient quarterbacks presently in the NFL. On this occasion, Purdy was influential in the 49ers’ thumping win over the Cowboys. No longer playing, Shannon Sharpe and Chad Johnson are known for their banter and insight on their show Nightcap. They were perfectly in agreement about Purdy’s performance at the weekend.

Shannon Sharpe listed out Purdy’s statistics from the match against the Cowboys. He noted that during the clash, Purdy completed 17 out of his 24 pass attempts. Furthermore, Purdy gained 252 yards via passing and threw four touchdowns. Sharpe also listed a few of Purdy’s overall numbers from the five-game-old 2023 regular season. In Sharpe’s words, “Brock Purdy – 17/24, 252, 4 touchdowns, 9 touchdowns this season, zero picks, 9.3 yards [per] attempt.”

Shannon Sharpe acknowledged that Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa had much better numbers so far. Simultaneously, the 49ers are 5-0 while the Dolphins are 4-1. The team from Florida lost to the Buffalo Bills 48-20 the week before last but beat the Broncos 70-20 the weekend before. Sharpe acknowledged that Purdy’s numbers were impressive and key to the 49ers’ successes. He added Purdy had quietly, without any fuss, joined the ranks of those vying for the season’s MVP award. As he put it, “For me, I know he doesn’t have the gaudy numbers like a Tua, but he has entered the MVP discussion.”

Chad Johnson added a little context to the statistical differences between Tagovailoa and Purdy. Johnson pointed out Tagovailoa got to work with much better personnel. So far, this season, Tagovailoa has 11 touchdowns to his name. He also threw five interceptions while averaging 9.7 yards gained per pass attempt. Johnson said, “He [Purdy] doesn’t have the gaudy numbers like Tua because he doesn’t have the type of personnel that Tua has to work with. They got a 4×1 team out there in Miami.”
Chad Johnson also showered Purdy’s teammates with praise as Shannon Sharpe nodded in agreement. He likened them to a construction crew that tackles the task at hand and stops not until completion. Johnson noted, “In the Bay Area, what they have is a bunch of dudes that put on their construction hats, they come to work and they gonna chip, they gonna chip you to death, all the way down the field. All the way down the field. They gonna keep on hammering and keep on hammering to get the job done.”

Brock Purdy had one of the games of his life on Sunday versus the Dallas Cowboys. He was key in the San Francisco 49ers thumping the Cowboys 42-10. Though his numbers are not as “gaudy” as those of Tua Tagovailoa, he got the job done. No muss, no fuss. In the process, according to Shannon Sharpe and an agreeing Chad Johnson, Purdy dropped his name into the reckoning for the MVP award. All that remains is to see whether he can deliver on that promise.
