Dave Portnoy dons his battle armor whenever his alma mater, the University of Michigan, is under attack. Despite their stellar showings on the field, they have had a season loaded with controversy off it thus far. They are not out of the woods at this point, with the NCAA investigation yet to be concluded.

Regardless, Dave Portnoy’s passionate defense of all things Michigan has earned him a new and important fan. In conversation with Barstool employee Evan McDowell (Big Ev), Portnoy revealed an exchange he had with the Wolverines’ offensive coordinator, Sherrone Moore. The pair complimented each other during that exchange, with the Rose Bowl looming ahead.

Dave Portnoy took to X and shared the video of that conversation with “Big Ev.” He wrote, “There’s nothing like Michigan Men supporting each other.” Portnoy then revealed the message he received the previous night from Moore. Moore had written, “You’re a beast!! You’re a beast, my guy. Go Blue.” In response, Portnoy wrote, “Huh. You’re the beast. See you at the Rose Bowl.”

That was not the end of that particular exchange. Sherrone Moore responded to Dave Portnoy’s words with the following, “Yes, sir, my friend. Big fan. Much respect for your passion for Michigan. Sherrone Moore.” Though Portnoy was gladdened by those messages, Evan McDowell was left a little disappointed.

“Big Ev” expected Portnoy to reveal an exchange with someone much more impressive. He name-dropped the likes of former Wolverines’ stars Charles Woodson and Tom Brady. Dave Portnoy had a conversation with the latter ahead of the Ohio State Buckeyes game. McDowell, an alumnus of the Ohio State University, doubtless did not enjoy that game, which ended 30-24 in Michigan’s favor.

With the Alabama Crimson Tide waiting for them in the Rose Bowl, the Michigan Wolverines know there is no room for error. The former has already one No. 1 ranked scalp this season in the form of the Georgia Bulldogs. They will endeavor to add another to that list, with much more at stake on this occasion. It remains to be seen just how successful a season this will be for both the Wolverines and Moore.
