Texas A&M University embraces a unique bunch of traditions. That institution is famous for it. Their identity and culture are one-of-a-kind. Not every onlooker agrees with that assessment, however. One who strongly disagreed with it is none other than Dave Portnoy. The Barstool Sports CEO famously labeled that institution the weirdest on the planet.

Dave Portnoy’s comment on X ignited a debate regarding the college and its uniqueness. Recently, the Aggies appointed Mike Elko as Jimbo Fisher’s successor for the head football coach job. Elko served under Fisher from 2018 to 2021 at the same location. He returns following two years at Duke, his first job as head coach. Another example of their idiosyncrasies surfaced at the introductory celebration for the new coach.

One more tweet poking fun at the Aggies

Dave Portnoy replied via tweet to Trey Wallace, a writer for OutKick. Wallace shared a short video of the gathering at Kyle Field on its feet ahead of Elko’s first press conference as the new coach. They were all singing part of the Aggie War Hymn in that 13-second-long clip. Additionally, they swayed from side to side as they sang. Portnoy’s reply via the same platform was short. He wrote, “This school is so fun to laugh at.”

Mike Elko enchanted the crowd with talk of building the country’s premier football program. He described Texas A&M’s legacy as one of unfulfilled potential up to this point. Elko promised to change that during his tenure at the helm. He would need to change a lot to get Dave Portnoy’s stamp of approval.

Dave Portnoy responds to the yell leaders’ performance

The self-styled El Presidente poked fun at the Aggies a little over a month ago after watching their ‘yell leaders’ in rehearsal. That is what their team of male cheerleaders is called. While it was a bit of a controversial take, it evidently struck a nerve. It came after the Texas Longhorns lost to the Oklahoma Sooners, Dave Portnoy’s other team, as it were.

Dave Portnoy is no stranger to controversial takes. He is a Michigan man, through and through. That is unlikely to change in his lifetime. Even so, he hates Lincoln Riley enough to support the Sooners, as well. It remains to be seen how his words in this case are received.
