Shannon Sharpe, the former NFL tight end, is no stranger to injuries in football games. On one occasion, he dislocated his right elbow while playing the then Oakland Raiders. During the first quarter of Super Bowl XXXIII, he suffered a torn medial collateral ligament in his left knee. That was after a tackle that saw Sharpe flip over and bang his knee into the helmet of an opposing player.

When it comes to contact injuries, Shannon Sharpe appears to have had his fair share. Simultaneously, he knows that non-contact injuries are a different ballgame altogether. Travis Kelce suffered a non-contact injury while playing the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday. Understandably, Sharpe was worried about the Kansas City Chiefs’ tight end.

NFL Sunday, the Chiefs went to Minnesota with the Vikings playing host. In the U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, Travis Kelce caught a pass from Patrick Mahomes towards the end of the first half. He then went down, his right leg giving way, with a little over a minute remaining in the second quarter of the game. After he saw Kelce’s non-contact injury, Shannon Sharpe took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to express concern. He noted the injury “didn’t look good” and kept his fingers crossed that the diagnosis would be a favorable one.

Travis Kelce limped to the sideline, with a little assistance, and then proceeded to the locker room. He returned to the sideline for the second half with his right ankle heavily wrapped. The tight end scored a touchdown in the third quarter after another Mahomes pass. That established a 14-point lead for the Chiefs, who ended up winning 27-20. Kelce had 10 receptions and carried for 67 yards overall. That was his second injury sustained during this season.

Travis Kelce’s recent spate of injuries

Travis Kelce already missed Week 1 of the season with a knee injury. At the end of that game, the Detroit Lions prevailed 21-20. The seriousness of Kelce’s current injury is yet to be determined. If he is out for a lengthy duration, it remains to be seen how the Chiefs’ offense copes. Kelce is considered a future Hall of Famer, after all.

Travis Kelce appears to have suffered a low ankle sprain, according to the Pro Football Network via Ian Rapoport. Mild low ankle sprains typically heal in one to three weeks with proper rest and care. Moderate sprains usually take between three and four weeks. The return timeline for a high ankle sprain is much greater.

They will take between six to eight weeks to heal. Strenuous activities must be avoided for a little longer and additional physical therapy will be required. The severity of this non-contact injury is yet to be established. Only then will his return timetable be fixed.
