Dave Portnoy’s feud with NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell is no secret. Portnoy was famously banned from the NFL following a protest at the league’s headquarters. That was in light of the ‘Deflategate’ scandal that saw Tom Brady suspended. Besides that, there was another occasion when he and some Barstool Sports employees used fake credentials to crash an NFL event.

Dave Portnoy’s grievances against Goodell increased by one more after the clash between the Buffalo Bills and the Philadelphia Eagles. There was a questionable refereeing call made against the Bills’ quarterback, Josh Allen. Allen appeared to be on the receiving end of a horse collar tackle from linebacker Haason Reddick. In the end, it was given as an intentional grounding penalty against the quarterback.

Roger Goodell “took the Eagles,” per Dave Portnoy

Dave Portnoy took to X and made his feelings on the matter known. In a reply to a video of the tackle shared by the Barstool Sports handle, Portnoy wrote the following: “Ref show in Philly. Goodell took the Eagles.” To that, he also added the hashtag #nflisrigged. Portnoy insinuated Roger Goodell might have something to do with the ref’s call. Allen, meanwhile, had his jersey ripped near his left shoulder during that tackle.

After faking a handoff to James Cook, Allen was forced out of the pocket as Reddick maneuvered past Gabe Davis to reach the quarterback. He grabbed a hold of Allen’s back collar and then pulled him to the ground. Strangely, the Bills were penalized for what the ref deemed an intentional grounding on Allen’s part. Dave Portnoy was incensed by the call.

What is a horse collar tackle?

In a horse collar tackle a defensive player pulls down the ball carrier by placing their hands inside the collar of their shoulder pads. It was one maneuver outlawed to ensure player safety. The shoulder pads are shaped like a horse collar at the back near the base of the neck. That section of the pads juts out a bit, providing defenders a small gap to stick their hands in and pull down the ball carrier. The penalty accompanying it is a loss of 15 yards and an automatic first down.

Dave Portnoy’s beef with Roger Goodell is unlikely to end anytime soon. Portnoy went as far as to suggest Goodell perjured himself in front of the House Oversight Committee. When asked about Portnoy’s ban from all things NFL, Goodell replied he was not familiar with the issue. It remains to be seen if there is a painless resolution to this saga in the near future.
