Dave Portnoy demonstrated how difficult it is to get rid of something addictive once it has taken hold. He famously turned his back on gambling after the Philadelphia Eagles beat the Buffalo Bills. That resolution was short-lived as Portnoy returned to the habit once more. That was during a college basketball match, which, too, did not go his way. However, he believes his next bet stands to gain him a ton. He went all-in on Michigan’s success in the post-season.
The Wolverines beat the Iowa Hawkeyes 26-0 to win their third consecutive Big Ten Conference championship on December 2. Despite Jim Harbaugh’s abysmal record in the Bowls, they are the top-ranked team in the playoffs this time. Michigan will face the Alabama Crimson Tide on New Year’s afternoon in the Rose Bowl.

Dave Portnoy took to his X handle and made the announcement. He wrote, “I will be betting 1 million on Michigan. That’s how confident I am.” After the trouncing of the Hawkeyes, the Wolverines became the top-ranked college football team in the nation. They are 13-0 overall for the season. Their next opponents caused a major upset by beating the Georgia Bulldogs, previously ranked no. 1.

Aside from that, Jim Harbaugh’s record in the post-season with Michigan stands at 1-6. It is unlikely he will get a better chance to rectify that. His return to the sideline was a successful one following a second three-game-long suspension. Dave Portnoy clearly believes in his abilities. It remains to be seen if he and his team repay that faith. The team’s recent performance against the Hawkeyes has definitely raised the bar.

Defense reigned supreme against the Hawkeyes
The Wolverines’ success over the Hawkeyes featured superb defensive displays. Though the former prevailed 26-0, it was due to four field goals from James Turner and two rushing touchdowns from Blake Corum. That made it 24 touchdowns for the season for Corum, five more than quarterback and Heisman candidate J.J. McCarthy. McCarthy did not register a touchdown for the fourth time in their last five games.

Dave Portnoy will doubtless be worried about the Wolverines’ misfiring offense. He will hope that the return of Jim Harbaugh will give them a shot in the arm. After all, they are not out of the woods yet. The NCAA investigation into Michigan is yet to conclude. While Portnoy believes they are in the right, it remains to be seen if the NCAA concurs.
