Dave Portnoy is a Michigan man from head to toe. Every bone in his body is loyal to his alma mater, the University of Michigan. Given the NCAA investigation into the Wolverines and the call for sanctions from the Big Ten, Portnoy stood firmly with them. He directed a lot of animosity at the Ohio State Buckeyes, who spearheaded most of the latter.

As Dave Portnoy predicted, the Wolverines triumphed over the Buckeyes for the third successive time. It was not the hiding he had expected, however. Michigan prevailed 30-24 and eventually became Conference champions for the third year running. Kyle McCord, starting quarterback for the Buckeyes last season, put himself on the transfer portal.

Taking to X, Dave Portnoy affirmed he held Kyle McCord in high regard. Portnoy wrote, “It was an honor playing against you, Kyle. There is no shame in losing to Michigan. CJ Stroud never beat Michigan. I was hoping to see you in Columbus next year. You were a warrior poet out there. Best of luck in the future. Keep your head up.”

Dave Portnoy reiterated that there was no shame in losing to Michigan. Kyle McCord threw two touchdowns against the eventual Conference champions. He also added two interceptions to that tally. Portnoy advised McCord to keep his head up. He pointed out that current Houston Texans‘ starting quarterback C.J. Stroud could not beat Michigan either during his time in Columbus, Ohio. McCord bid adieu as well.

Kyle McCord hopes to embrace a new challenge

The Buckeyes ended the regular season behind the Wolverines in the Big Ten East table. They will face the 10-2 Missouri Tigers in the Cotton Bowl on December 29. The Buckeyes lost just once during the regular season, in their final game. Ahead of his departure, Kyle McCord expressed his gratitude to his team, the support staff, and the Buckeyes faithful. He thought it was time for him to look for other glistening opportunities.

Dave Portnoy, while he has no soft corner for Ohio State, was the bigger person and thereby showed magnanimity following Michigan’s victory. He gave credit where it was due and wished Kyle McCord the best of luck for the future. With Alabama waiting in the wings, Portnoy will hope that his alma mater can deliver on the big occasion at this time of asking. He remains in their corner through thick and thin. Portnoy will defend them to the ends of the Earth, as is his modus operandi.
