Home/NFL

Dave Portnoy has a bone to pick with NFL commissioner Roger Goodell. The NFL’s handling of the Deflategate scandal featuring Tom Brady and the New England Patriots met with Portnoy’s displeasure. Barstool Sports organized a protest at NFL headquarters in 2015. That eventually led to Portnoy being banned from all things NFL.

Along the way, Dave Portnoy handed out around 70,000 paper towels with Goodell’s likeness on them outside the Gillette Stadium. There was a clown’s nose in place of Goodell’s breathing apparatus. That was to register his anger at and ridicule of the NFL commissioner. Portnoy returned to the same venue in a different capacity. He previewed the Army-Navy game at that very parking lot.

Dave Portnoy shared a video of the beginning of that episode of the Barstool College Football Show on X. He was seated beside Kayce Smith, Big Cat, and Brandon Walker. Portnoy wrote, “This is the first time back in this lot since I handed out the Goodell clown towels before the Pats game.” He further noted it was great to be home in New England once more.

Dave Portnoy reminisced about his last visit to the same venue. He said, Last time I was in this parking lot, this was ground zero, when we were puttin’, handing out all the Goodell clown towel faces. A million over there. This is where everyone came. We handed them out. We ran the coward outta town the last time I was in this parking lot.” Portnoy had fond memories of that expedition despite the consequences.

Biggest game at Gillette Stadium this year

Dave Portnoy lamented the fact that the matchup between the Army Black Knights and the Navy Midshipmen was the biggest game at Gillette Stadium this year. He said, This is the biggest game of the year at Gillette, which is crazy. Like, I haven’t been back here since we sucked a**. But, yeah, we suck a** now, that’s all right.” That was a sad fact accompanying the Patriots’ decline in recent seasons.

Dave Portnoy further commented he did not think there were greater numbers for the Army-Navy game than Taylor Swift. He admitted he loved them both and did not wish to be pitted against them. The Black Knights emerged victorious 17-11, keeping the Midshipmen scoreless for the first three quarters. It remains to be seen whether Portnoy will get to enter Gillette Stadium once again.
