Dave Portnoy will always support the New England Patriots. That’s a given. Even though the Patriots’ recent capitulations drove other fans away, Portnoy was there to stay. Enjoying their worst spell under coach Bill Belichick, the Patriots are presently 2-8 for the season. Only the Carolina Panthers have fewer wins in the regular season so far.
Belichick’s team lost to the Indianapolis Colts 10-6 in Frankfurt. Only two field goals put them on the scoreboard. Given that, it is no surprise Dave Portnoy no longer considers his team Super Bowl candidates. Portnoy named the Cincinnati Bengals as his pick for the Super Bowl in a tweet a while back. They were one of the form teams in the NFL then, having won four in a row. That, too, is a thing of the past now.

The Bengals lost at home to the Houston Texans 30-27 to bring that streak to an end. Zac Taylor’s side are now 5-4 and still rooted to the foot of the table in AFC North. They lost the chance to extend their winning streak to five games. That would have taken them level with the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Cleveland Browns in the win-loss column. Sadly, it was not to be. Additionally, Dave Portnoy assumed responsibility for that loss, suggesting his support jinxed their progress. He took to X and tweeted the words, “I killed the Bengals.”

A last-second field goal from Matt Ammendola sealed the game in the visitors’ favor. The Bengals had mounted a spirited fightback to level the scores with 01:33 left. They were trailing 7-20 close to the midpoint of the third quarter, incidentally. That included two touchdowns and two field goals. The Bengals will face the AFC North table-topping Baltimore Ravens next. It is unlikely that they can make it to the Super Bowl barring a truly miraculous Hail Mary. They are the second Portnoy-backed team to look like suffering that fate.

The New England Patriots caught in a downward spiral
The New England Patriots are presently in free fall. They failed to score a touchdown for 12 quarters in a row during this season. In fact, they failed to register anything on the scoreboard for eight of those. In their current streak of three successive losses, they have not scored a touchdown in the last six quarters. The Patriots will next visit the MetLife Stadium on 26 November. They will face the 2-8 New York Giants there.

Dave Portnoy is not the most reliable chap when it comes to football know-how. For instance, he saw the second coming of the legendary Tom Brady in Mac Jones. Bill Belichick, most importantly, disagreed with that assessment. Belichick hooked Jones once more this season. He threw yet another interception against the Colts. His replacement fared no better. Despite a misfiring offense and porous defense, the Patriots will hope to at least end the season on a relative high.
