Dave Portnoy is a man of strong opinions. Usually, ‘the stronger, the better’ is his mantra. Most recently, he tempered one of his responses in a much more level-headed manner. Portnoy kept his cool in unforeseen circumstances that had just a hint of controversy about them. The moment in question occurred during the clash between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Buffalo Bills.

Hosting the Bills at Arrowhead Stadium, the Chiefs thought they’d done enough to clinch the win from the jaws of certain defeat. With a little over a minute left in the game, the Chiefs thought they scored the go-ahead touchdown. The yellow flag on the ground was not spotted right away. That call drew the ire of the Chiefs’ quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

On the matter, Dave Portnoy offered his take via X. He wrote, “Mahomes is gonna see the replay and write the refs an apology.” The play in question saw Patrick Mahomes send a pass the way of Travis Kelce. Kelce threw the ball laterally across to Kadarius Toney on the other end, to score the go-ahead touchdown. An offside penalty was given against Toney, rendering that superb play null and void.

Replays later confirmed that the call had been justified. Kadarius Toney’s foot had crossed the line of scrimmage before the snap of the ball. Patrick Mahomes did not take kindly to that call. He went after three officials incensed, feeling his team was wronged by questionable refereeing. Given the replays, Dave Portnoy predicted Mahomes would accordingly offer the refs an apology. It was not the only time the Chiefs were on the end of a questionable refereeing decision.

Yet another call against the Chiefs

Chiefs’ previous game, away to the Green Bay Packers, was eventful in that respect, too. During that 27-19 loss, there was a seemingly obvious pass interference call that went unnoticed. That was with less than a minute on the clock. The 8-5 Chiefs have now lost two in a row for the first time this season, jeopardizing their playoff hopes.

That game ended the Chiefs’ streak of four wins with Taylor Swift in the stands. Now, they are 4-2 with Dave Portnoy’s favorite popstar cheering them on. Her stature as a lucky charm for Travis Kelce appears to also be waning. All that remains is to see when and how Portnoy’s prediction comes true.
