One of the most untouchable records in the world of sports very nearly got touched. In the year 1970, Peter Press Maravich a.k.a Pistol Pete made it to the pinnacle of his career by wrapping up his prolific college basketball vocation by scoring 3,667 points. The record set by Pistol Pete remained a mirage for 53 years until now. The 24-year-old Detroit Mercy Titans point guard, Antoine Davis, almost broke the decade-old record at the Horizon league basketball tournament. Unfortunately, before leveling up with Maravich’s incredible victory, the Titans got eliminated from the 2023 college basketball invitational. Hence, Davis’ quest to reach the far-fetched dream ended with his team’s elimination.

In the 2023 edition of the Horizon League tournament, Detroit Mercy finished the season with a 14-19 record, making them ineligible for a bid to the NIT and NCAA tournament. Davis needed 26 points to break Pistol Pete’s record but finished the final round with 22. More so, as the 24-year-old’s college tenure came to an end, he left the arena with 3,664 points in his bag, just three points shy of Maravich’s historical record. While the point guard’s fandom applauded the young champion, many from the social media cult expressed their disregard for Davis’ commendable spree.

Netizens rendered in discontentment with Antoine Davis’ close call to make the history

Recently, the 97.1 FM Ticket shared the 24-year-old’s incredible feat of chasing the historical record. Captioning the post, the media house wrote, “Antoine Davis of Detroit Mercy came closer than anyone ever has to rewrite one of the most hallowed records in NCAA history. His Titans were eliminated from the Horizon League Basketball Tournament with Davis sitting at 3,664 career points scored”. Following this, many flocked to the comment section to express their disregard. Netizens penned:

This was a joke..the Detroit Mercy dude played in 60 more games and had a 3 point line..no one will touch Pistol Pete

This statistic is a joke, almost twice as many game & 3 point shot !

Until someone scores more points in three seasons, The Pistol will always be the NCAA leading scorer, not someone who played 5 years and averaged half the points per game

Nope. 3 seasons do not compare to 5 seasons and with a 3 point shot. Long live old stats

He wasnt even close . Maravich did it in a two point era , and in three years . No comparison

In real life Davis didn’t come close. Do the math

While some showed their discontentment, others congratulated the young prodigy for reaching closer to Maravich’s record. One penned, “Congratulations!!! You came close. Now let’s see who can break your record.” Another fan wrote, “Congratulations! Great career”. One fan added, “Congratulations to this guy. His accomplishments were great and probably untouchable for years. But as everyone has said Pistol had 3 years and no 3 point line. This will never be broken in three years. RIP Pistol”.
