Shannon Sharpe and Chad Johnson, the former NFL players, regularly riff off of each other during their show Nightcap. That show is a hotbed for sport-related insight and hilarity. The most recent source for both happened to be one of the happiest days in the lives of the two people involved. A fan of the San Francisco 49ers popped the question to a Dallas Cowboys fan. For context, the 49ers walloped the Cowboys 42-10 on Sunday at the Levi’s Stadium. Moreover, they knocked out the Cowboys during last season’s playoffs.
Sharpe asked Johnson if he had seen the clip of the proposal. ‘Ocho,’ as Chad Johnson is often referred to, replied in the negative. For good measure, he added that would make for a crazy living situation. He implied that given recent events, a Cowboys’ fan would hate the mere mention of the 49ers while the 49ers fan would not hesitate to add salt to that open wound. Shannon Sharpe begged to differ ever so slightly.

Sharpe asked his co-host if he could marry or date someone sporting a crest that would irk him to no end. Johnson replied that he could successfully compartmentalize his relationship with his significant other and the sporting rivalry.
He admitted to believing that the pairing could be at each other’s throats during the season without causing any serious rifts. As he put it, “… You gotta remember that’s only six months outta the year. So, am I able to compartmentalize and remember and think that I am marrying this woman in front of the man upstairs for goodness and in health – I forgot the words to that thing. For them three hours when that game is on, man, I don’t even see you. We enemies. I don’t even see you.” He further added, “If somebody don’t like GOAT James, we can’t be together”
Sharpe added an important condition. He posited that if his team lost to their bitter rivals, for the sake of their relationship, “she’d better not bring it up.” Shannon Sharpe admitted to being wired that way.

He added that if his significant other disliked LeBron James, the relationship was dead in the water. Sharpe considers James the G.O.A.T. of basketball. He mentioned any disrespect aimed at the power forward will be a sticking point.

Sharpe admitted that while the marriage proposed earlier is fraught with risk, there are indeed crazier households. He pointed out the rivalry between the Cowboys and the Philadelphia Eagles was far more intense. Sharpe opined that fans on either side of that rivalry would have it worse upon entering matrimony than the happy couple crossing the San Francisco-Dallas divide.

Shannon Sharpe added, in his estimation, the rivalry between the Auburn Tigers and the Alabama Crimson Tide also outranked the Cowboys-49ers spat. According to Bleacher Report, that is the biggest rivalry in football. In Sharpe’s words, “It’s not as crazy as you think. So, I’m thinking like, a Cowboy proposing to an Eagle, or an Alabama proposing to an Auburn, that’s gonna be a messed-up house there.” In short, he may just have given the happy couple reason to hope.

On their show, Shannon Sharpe and Chad Johnson agreed rival fans would make for strange bedfellows. Especially in the context of marriage, Johnson opined that 49ers fans and Cowboys fans fit that description perfectly. Sharpe replied with a list of potential marriages that he considered doomed from the outset. In his case, Sharpe added he would never date or marry someone who disliked his G.O.A.T. in basketball, namely LeBron James.
