Bruce Lee was a Hollywood megastar in addition to being a martial arts legend. He was popular amongst the masses for his martial arts prowess. Lee was, in fact, so famous that he helped popularize martial arts movies in the 1970s. While his life might have seemed to be perfectly put together from afar, exteriors can be often misleading.
At one point, Bruce Lee was a struggling actor who was living off his wife Linda. They both got married at a time when interracial marriages were frowned upon. He also started his career at a point when Asian actors in American cinema were non-existent. Even after he reached superstar status, it was not all smooth sailing for the Lees.

Even after Bruce Lee started appearing in Hollywood movies and started earning from them, the Lee family was not out of the woods when it came to finances. As Matthew Polly describes in Bruce Lee’s biography titled Bruce Lee: A Life, “Bruce admitted to a friend. ‘First time in my life I am worried about where the money will come from if anything happens to me.'” But what had brought this sudden onslaught of worry?
One summer, Grace Ho, Lee’s mother, and Robert Lee, Lee’s brother, came to visit him and his family. Bruce Lee had just had a child and his mother wanted to meet her newest grandkid. Grace and Robert stayed with the Lee family the entire summer, in their Bel Air mansion. Matthew Polly writes, “In their eyes, Bruce must have seemed a great success. To all outward appearances, Bruce Lee was the model immigrant?a homeowner in Bel Air with a Porsche, two cute kids, and a lovely Caucasian wife.”?
Nevertheless, looks can be deceiving. Polly adds, “That it was all built on a mountain of debt and teetering on the brink of collapse made Bruce?s story a prototypically American one.” Bruce Lee was just starting a family with his wife, and all was not going smoothly for the couple.
Having kids scared Lee
It was not because he did not want to be a dad. He was simply worried about who would take care of the family if something ever happened to Lee. “It was a very difficult time for us,” said Linda. Matthew Polly adds in the biography, “The arrival of Shannon made Bruce unbelievably happy and extremely anxious. ‘I have to be more concerned for my family now,'” were the words that Lee shared with his friend.
