In a curious twist, the host of the auction spotted him waving his hand and assumed that the actor had raised a bid for $500,000 for a horse painting by the famous artist Xu Beihong. Unwittingly, Chan had to buy it. However, later, people visiting his home often appreciated the painting. In fact, his son, Jaycee grew attached to it.?

This made Chan develop a passion for bidding and buying antique things from auctions. Once when he was unable to attend one, he asked his friends to bid on his behalf. They told Chan on the phone about a table carved with the Thousand Character Classic, in red sandalwood inlaid with yellow boxwood, at a starting price of $500,000. He immediately told them to buy it straight in millions. He explained in his biography, ?I thought it was too good to be true to find such a precious object for so little and told him to go straight to a million.?
