Jackie Chan is one of the most popular martial artists to feature in action films. One can say Hollywood without the martial arts legend would be unimaginable. However, once early in his career, Chan was left to wonder whether pursuing his Hollywood dream was worth it. A certain incident in his life almost pushed the actor to book return tickets to Australia.

Jackie wrote about the same in his autobiography. So what was the incident? Let’s find out.

Action films without Jackie Chan?

In his memoir Never Grow Up, Jackie Chan talked about various lows and highs in his personal and professional life. While narrating stories from his early days in Hollywood, Chan also mentioned one of his first roles in “New Fist of Fury”.

The memory, though, was not a happy one. Although working with director Lo Wei was exciting, comments from certain people broke the actor’s heart. When the sound engineers were working on the sound of the movie, an excited Chan sneaked into the place to see his work on the screen.

However, his mood was ruined when he heard some of them say, “‘What on earth was Lo Wei thinking? Big nose and tiny eyes. How does he have the nerve to call himself Shing Lung with a face like that? What a waste of money.'” Chan was not expecting such harsh comments and recalled, “Tears started flowing down my cheeks. I snuck out of there, completely destroyed.”

Unfortunately, much to Chan’s dismal, the movie did not do well at the box office. Once he was back at director Wei’s office, the martial arts expert was worried that he might lose his chance to work further in the industry.?“Looking at those numbers, I almost bought a ticket back to Australia right away. I was so stressed-out, I started sweeping Lo Wei?s office and picking up the trash, reverting back to habits I’d formed at the drama academy,”?confessed Chan.

Although Chan stayed under the director Wei’s shelter due to their contract, he still did not gain success. For a year, his films either flopped or attracted average audience attention. Chan’s habit of slipping into sound mixing booths also remained constant. Most times, he fell asleep weeping there.

However, film producer Ng See-yuen was the reason for Chan’s first breakthrough in the industry. The producer understood Chan’s fighting style and decided to produce a film that would not be expected as a “Bruce Lee film”.
