The widespread fandom of DC and MCU comics dominated the 60s era of the Hollywood entertainment industry. When those comic universes transformed into motion pictures, the DC and MCU penchants were nothing but elated with the news. Nevertheless, the first two comics which were adapted for television were Batman and the Green Hornet. Well, the actors who bought the comic characters to life were Van Williams, Adam West, Burt Ward, and none other than Bruce Lee.?

While these adaptations were doing exceptionally well, the makers came up with the idea of collaboration between these two series. While the crossover episodes earned a treasure trove of plaudits from the spectators, the behind the scene anecdotes were as much intriguing as the Little Dragon?s next kung fu move. Interestingly, one such incident even made Lee burst into laughter.

In his book, Bruce Lee: a life, Matthew Polly penned an incident that took place on the sets of Batman and the Green Hornet. As per the book, while filming the fighting sequence between Lee?s character Kato and Ward?s character Robin, the Little Dragon?s persona intimidated Ward. While shooting the scene, Kato cornered Robin with his daunting stare. Witnessing this, a stuntman present on the set whispered, ?black panther and the yellow chicken?.

The stuntman’s comment made the Little Phoenix laugh. Lee stated, ?I couldn?t keep a straight face anymore.” Then, he further picked on Robin by saying, ?Lucky for Robin it was not for real?otherwise, he would have been one dead bird?.

Moreover, before filming the crossover episode, the script demanded Lee lose the fight against Ward, which made the Little Phoenix more furious and he refused to shoot a fighting sequence. Therefore, Batman?s producer, William Dozier, agreed to Lee?s terms and revised the script. In the new revisions, Kato and Robin?s fight ends in a tie. This time, Burt Ward became petrified and refused to work alongside the Dragon.

Aware of the martial artist?s fighting prowess, Ward was nervous about sharing the screen with the Little Phoenix. Recalling Ward?s apprehension, Van Williams a.k.a. The Green Hornet once mentioned, ?He didn?t want to work with him?. Nevertheless, while the script asserted that the fight ends in a tie, the Dragon didn?t make it easy for Ward to win the fight.

The on-screen crossover of Batman and the Green Hornet is a treat to watch. However, the off-screen tension between Robin and Kato is worth having a look into.
