Jackie Chan is a master of martial arts and a Kung Fu prodigy in addition to being a famous actor and even a singer. However, as successful as he has been in his career, his personal life has not been without its set of problems and hurdles. In his autobiography titled ‘Never Grow Up’, Chan talks about his relationship with his father. He also talks about the exact moment he realized how little he actually knew about what his father’s life was like, before he came along.

Chan spent most of his childhood separated from his father. He studied in Hong Kong while growing up, while his father migrated to Canberra, Australia in 1960. Hence they spent all that time apart till Chan joined his parents in Canberra, Australia in 1971. Because of his parents, Chan has a special relationship with Australia and even considers himself part Australian. However, while there, he discovered a startling truth about his father that he never expected.

After retirement, Chan’s father left Australia and moved back to Hong Kong. However, Chan quickly started to notice some bizarre things. His dad sent money to someone in China and even received a letter containing a photo addressed as “my dear father.” This really confused him, but his father was unwilling to explain so Chan shrugged it off.

However, Chan soon started hearing some rumors that his name was not actually Chan. This alarmed him even further and he was more eager than ever to find the truth. He recalls in his autobiography, “I started hearing rumors that my surname wasn?t Chan, and that it was actually Fong (or Fang in Mandarin).”?His first thought was, “No way. How could that be?”

But his father was still holding on to his secrets and Chan only got to know the real story after the shooting for ‘Traces of a Dragon’ was complete and the movie came out in 2003.

The double life of Chan’s parents

‘Traces of a Dragon’ is a documentary that literally traces the life and history of Jackie Chan, including his parents. It turns out that Jackie Chan’s father was a spy who worked in military intelligence and was married to another woman before Chan’s mother with whom he had two kids.

However, he had to leave his young kids behind when the Communist revolution started, so he came to Shanghai. He got a job as a muscle for hire and met Chan’s mom while she was dealing drugs. While he let her go that one time, he later found out that she was a notorious gambler infamous on the streets of Shanghai.

Later, they both escaped to Hong Kong, got married, and the legend Jackie Chan was born. It is true what they say, true legends don’t come by easy. It’s fitting that Chan’s parents would have such an interesting, albeit difficult, and distressing story.
